97KDX220 or 01KX125

As I said in my last post. I am really liking my 06 KDX200. So much I am buying another one for parts. There are two on CL I can get. One is a 97 KDX220 that is real nice. New plastics, seat, bars, mx rear fender, new chain and sprockets, carb modes to 38mm,full fmf rev pipe, newly rebuilt motor.

So nice that my bike might end up being a parts bike for this. Once I get it I'll obviously just ride the bike as is to see how it compares to my 200. Then I'll try swapping the silencer onto the 200, then the modified carb. If I like the improvements I'll just buy another pipe and mod the 200 carb. Then I'll end up with a modded 200 and a 220. If I have any issues I can swap parts to trace down problems. My question is.... Are there any components that are not compatible between the two. I already have $2100 into my 200. I can get this 220 for $1500.

Another choice is I can get a 2001 KX125 that is mint but needs a top end. I can get this for $800. Then I can swap the whole front end including the new pro taper bars that are on it. I'm assuming the rear wheel will work on my KDX? If needed could I swap the swing arm as well? Would the plastics bolt up? Would the full fmf pipe that's on the 125 bolt up to the KDX motor? Would the tank work in the KDX frame? Or would it be easier to just put the KDX motor into the 125 frame? I could also sell the 125 motor to recoupe some of my $800. Wondering what the motor would be worth? I am doing one or the other
tomorrow or I could also buy both bikes. Just need some opinions. Thanks Mike

Lots of options. I'd be real tempted to put the kdx motor in the 125kx frame.

After you make your decision and start parting out parts you don't want, post them here in the FOR SALE section.

I am sure there are members that would be interested in your extra stuff.

Hi KDXMainer,

I am new to the forum (and KDX's myself) as well. I was looking at that 97 also. seems like it would be a great bike on its own but I just bought this one and there is no way I can get a second one by the misses. It looks like the hot setup might be the KX/DX (200 motor in the 125). I don't know that much about it myself but I am really liking the one I have. It already has KX250 front forks and head and carb work from RB. I have been getting it all setup for me and I think it is there for now. I don't know how fast it is supposed t be but it feels stout enough for me.

Anyway, good luck with your decision and whatever project you end up taking on.

I am in SE Mass BTW

It is not mint AND needs a top end. It is just the way the dirt bike world works.

Not much you can use off the 125, unless you want to do a hybrid. You can get front end parts much cheaper then 800. I would imagine a blown engine is not worth much unless you want to take the time to part it out. I have a 99 125,same as the 01 hybrid and realy do love it.im a little crazy and would probably buy both and build a hybrid.

Don't know why you'd want to run a 38mm carb on a 220, kind of defeats the whole reason for the motors design. RB will bore the 33 out to 36, but you don't really gain anything above that, and lose bottom end. As for parts between the 200 and 220, most of the hard parts will swap.
KDXMainer wrote:...Then I can swap the whole front end including the new pro taper bars that are on it.

You can't swap the 125 front end straight over, would need to press out the stem and make some other mods, doable, but not a straight swap. Check out the fork conversion section.
KDXMainer wrote:... I'm assuming the rear wheel will work on my KDX?

No, different size axles, 19" rim vs the 200/220 18", not worth the hassle IMO
KDXMainer wrote:... If needed could I swap the swing arm as well?

No
KDXMainer wrote:...Would the plastics bolt up?

Not directly, they could be made to work with effort
KDXMainer wrote:...Would the full fmf pipe that's on the 125 bolt up to the KDX motor?

A 125 pipe on the 200/220 motors would likely run, but not great.
KDXMainer wrote:...Would the tank work in the KDX frame?

No
KDXMainer wrote:...Or would it be easier to just put the KDX motor into the 125 frame?

Yes!
KDXMainer wrote:...I could also sell the 125 motor to recoup some of my $800. Wondering what the motor would be worth?

If you rebuild it and get it running you could probably drop it on a cart guy for 5-600$ (at least in my area that's about what they go for), but you're going to spend a couple hundred getting into running condition depending on what's wrong with it.

None of the other parts on the 125 will work with the 200/220. Like Royadams, I am a bit biased, but I'd drop the 220 motor into the 125 frame, part out the 220, and live life large on the hybrid (mine is now 4 years old and the only bike I'll trade it for is the new Beta 300---don't ride one---it will just make you spend money :-)).

Jeff, so your the guy that got that one. I was going to buy that but at the time only wanted a parts bike. I hesitated on that for a couple days. Finally made the decision to buy it. Woke up the next morning with back pain and couldn't move. By 4pm I was ok. I called the guy and he said he just sold it. You beat me by a few hours. Let me know if you want to sell that. Mike 603 531 0046 also this 97 is regestered for mass riding. Living in southern Maine it never occurred to me to drive to mass to ride as everyone I know comes up here to ride. However I might try the north Adams area since this bike regestered. If you want to come up here let me know.

Thanks Bufftester, for the replies. As far as the 38mm carb goes. Thanks for pointing that out. When I read that I assumed he had the carb mod done. But rereading the ad it does say that the bikes carb was replaced with a 38mm carb. I'll have to ask if he has the stock one. If not I'll have to test ride it but he says it runs good. As far as the fork swap. I've been reading here for a while and am aware that it is not a direct swap.. As far as the pipe swap goes I would just have used the silencer as I already have the woods header on my 200 and the 220 is coming with its own rev pipe. The 125,motor is not blown just low on compression. Probably just needs a piston rings and cylinder honing .
Wondering how much work to weld new mounting brackets on the 125 frame? I have not researched in detail exactly what's involved in doing this swap. Thanks again for the replies I'm going to get the 97 today.

Sorry to have gotten it out from under you. I am glad it was not turned into a parts bike though. It is set up pretty well already and looks like it is going to be a great trail bike for me (and probably even my son later on).

It would be cool to get together to do some riding at some point. I lived in Maine for 5 years but have never done any off road riding up there. How far up are you?

Jeff

That would not have been a parts bike. That's why I didn't buy it the fist day the ad went up. The 97 will not be one either. I live in limington Maine. There are dozens of trail systems all around me. Glad you like the bike. For the money you couldn't have bought a better bike.

I hope your not asking me. Anyway I got the bike home. Pretty happy with it. It looks awesome, tomorrow after a good ride I'll know for sure. Now I have something to compare my other bike to.
