Shock disassembly?

Post by mwoj »

So i have a 1985 kdx200. I attempted to dissemble the shock, to change the shock head. And also change the oil and have the nitrogen refilled. Basically go through it. And the chrome? plated shaft is perfect, no pitting or rust. Anyway, I was able to get the bigspring off, and then I got the circlip holding apparently everything in place. But, with my luck, nothing is coming out. I looked at the diagrams, read the manual, and nothing else is keeping the "piston" assembly in. Manual says it should slide out. But it isnt.... Anyone have this issue?

No idea how to insert picture onto here. But heres a picture of the same shock.

I disconnected reservoir hose from shock body. I then loosened and removed the two spring tension nuts. i then was able to slide the spring off. I then went and popped the cap off of the shock body (The area where the shiny shaft goes into the rest of the unit). I then tapped down the unit, which was located under the cap I just slid up, in order to reveal a circlip. I then removed that circlip. According to the manual, everything should slide apart now. However, it is not.

Circlip is definitely out. I cant fit anything down there to clean. Is there a special tool? Btw when I first got to this area, it was covered with dirt/water that was trapped in there.

use something metallic to scrap the crud off. a jewelers screwdriver, an exacto knife, a small pocket knife.
also push in a kitchen scouring pad (plastic) with oil on it and move it around to clean the surface
