Fork tool

Post by Ryan »

ok, well im gonna go to ace today and see if they have a 14mm hex wrench to clean out my fork cartridges. I am going to try to get my front end back together. The tool i have measures cc's and inches. As most of you know, the range the oil needs to be from the top of the fork is 85mm to 100mm. I am thinking to put it at about 90 or a tad less so i have some higher compression to make my forks a we bit stiffer. Anyway, how do i use the tool i have to tell when i am 90mm away from the top? Like i said the incraments are in cc's and i dont know how to convert it. Can i just measure 90mm onto the tool? will this work?? thanks for any help.

Modify the tool into this:

Set the piece hanging down into the fork to your desired height.

Can you post a pic of your tool Ryan, and not the pic from the web page you purchased it from?

well i guess i could but i would need some nice gold billet aluminum and some copper.

I will show you some pictures of it but it really does look like the ads show it. Except the bendable tubing does not go straight. It is the one for 12.99, or the first one on progressivesuspension.com

Right, the tool you bought is to fill something with oil...something with a small entry hole. The tool you should have is farther down the page meant to adjust the level of the oil once you have filled it. It should be fairly easy to modify your existing tool with something tubular and rigid (like a straw) and soemthing to rest ont the top of your fork ( piece of wood). It is not the best idea but it should work.

BTW, nice that you noticed the disk is made from aluminum and not brass. It is actually iridited aluminum and the knurled srew is brass.

It's "homemade" .

Cost me $0.47 total. ( for the vinyl tube).

It would work for you , but try to make one modifying your existing tool. You can do it.

Go to your local hardware store and I am sure you can pick up what you need to finish the job, probably cost you no more than $5.00.

I used copper as the pipe and I made that aluminum thingy by spinning it really fast and moving a sharp object along the outside of it. It would work on several type of fork including USD and stock forks and it is adjustable.

You could pick up a similar looking disk to this at the hardware store and simply drill a hole through it for the copper tube. You should be able to get your vynil tube to stretch over the copper by heating it if neccessary.

I agree with Inda, a piece of wood and a srew is a quick fix.

You got 60 sec. and this photo will self destruct:
