Hi. I've got a 98' 220. RB head and carb, vforce reeds, fmf Woods pipe.
I'm looking for a bit more mid to top end power, and I am willing to sacrifice a bit of low end, as I've got pleeeeenty.
Since I can't afford an fmf Rev pipe at the moment, I was thinking about rotating my stater plate one notch to the left (counter clockwise) to retard the ignition timing. What are your experiences/thoughts on this? Some say that there is little effect on a 220 versus doing this on a 200. Is it worth doing?
Thanks

With out putting a rev pipe on it , the gains would be minimal.
Save up for a rev pipe and use the stock silencer
Sell that woods pipe to someone who owns a 200 , they should never be used on a 220

Bro, this. I put the gnarly desert (rev) pipe on yesterday and it added so much top end it overshadows how awesome the bottom end is.C George wrote:With out putting a rev pipe on it , the gains would be minimal.

Okay, I'll up the priority on getting a rev pipe.
Once I get the rev pipe, will retarding the timing be a worth while mod as well?

try retarding it to see how you like it.

Retarding timing benefits top rpm power but lessens pre-7K power.

I had my 220s ports opened up & matched , the head , carb & piston were also modified by a local 2 stroke guru who knows his stuff.....I told him I wanted a good spread of power throughout the whole RPM range & that's exactly what I got ....he also altered the timing slightly to give me more on top for a little longer which was noticeable ....try it & see you can always put it back if you don't like it.

We run our 220's with a few degree's additional advanced timing. Everything is a compromise and we
don't need over rev. Great pull from idle to wide open.
You have to run good fuel with 220 head work and advanced timing.
