1988 KDX200 Project

Post by PyroKDX »

Hi All,
I have an opportunity to be given a 1988 KDX200 with a seized piston (bike has only been sitting a year with no use). Is it worth my while to spend the money on getting it running again? I am an ATVer with no prior experience with bikes. Are these parts still available and would anyone not recommend putting the effort into this?

Appreciate the comments and look forward to the possibly of the forums help on this project lol.

I just bought a 1987 kdx. Basically the same. A lot of parts are not avable through Kawasaki. A good amount of parts are made aftermarket and parts from other makes and years and even brands like Yamaha will interchange. I've read some people using YZ forks is why I say that.

Worth it, don't know! I paid 175$ for my blown up kdx. I'll have 500$ in top end rebuild from melliinum but that includes a wisco piston, rings, wrist pin and bearing, head gasket and some head work and they are timing my KIIPS. I had the rear shock rebuilt and he quoted me 300-400$. He did say the shock was cheaper then he quoted but isn't done as he's waiting for parts from Kawasaki. I had a bolt custom turned with greese zert for the suspension for 25$. Brake caliper rebuild was 50$. Airbox cover NOS was eBay 50$. Air cleaner and I had oil for it was 25$. Fork seals wIth oil was over 50$. New bars and grips and fork boot covers with clamps was over 75$. Front sprocket was 30$ I believe from Kawasaki. My chain and rear sprocket looked replaced some what recently so I left them. Broke my KIPS rod on disassembly and a used one was 50$ off a memeber. Part not available through Kawasaki. Gasket kit Moose brand was 50$ plus. I ordered some random stuff that I haven't got from Kawasaki which half the order was canceled as no longer avalible but that stuff was say 100$ for tank rubber bushing, random bolts, clamps and I forget all. 100$ for a aftermarket air intake boot from hot foot moto. Kawasaki no longer has it. I'm not done and still want to buy aftermarket plastic and tool bag. My rear rim and hub need replaced. I'm missing my tail light yet and my kick stand is missing. 6$ for new head light bulb I need to order. I've stripped the bike to the frame and cleaned completely and regreased everything. Total cost, I'd have to total it but I'm sure I'm pushing 1500$. 2000$ plus if I do he plastics and stuff I still need. I could buy a used 2000s or 90s for the same price range ready to ride basically and newer which parts would be avalible.

But there's the fun in restoring and the second kind of cool from having a nice running old bike!

I know I'm forgetting more, but, bought a manual for 30$, break lever nos off eBay for 10$, spark plugs x2 6$, 30$ in gas, degreaser and paper towels, 6$ for brake fluid, I've easily bought 25$ in lost bolts from Ace for side cover and stuff. New packing for the Ansler silencer was only 6$ which suprised me. I did reweld the tabs to the pipe. That's pretty much it I think.

If you like riding then its worth it. But if your fixing it to make a profit don't do it lol. I bought a 99 kdx 200 and rebuilt both bottom and top end, new wheel bearings, seat cover, clutch lever, front tire, and have just over 2 grand in it now. You should be able to buy most of the things you need from rocky mountain atv. They have an OEM page if you cant find after market parts.
