regular vs. liquid gasket question

Post by ronopolis »

I just went through a multi-day "why doesn't my KIPS work" session which I just solved (with the help of this forum). I had to remove the clutch cover, the water pump cover, and the larger engine cover that the clutch cover attaches to.

Do I need to order new gaskets for these covers, or can I use the red high-temp gasket maker? Opinions?

Use paper gaskets, please. If you want to do it quick and cheap, you can use gasket paper and cut your own. If you oil them when you put them in, sometimes they will be reusable next time you have to pull the covers apart.

+1 ,,, rtv's are a pia . Use paper . I oil mine with 2 stroke oil and disassembly is no problem.

I highly agree with paper gaskets. Permatex works in a pinch, sometimes. But I would not trust it if I was able to buy the right ones. Just buy a good complete gasket set. It will be $50 - $60 and you will have a full top end kit left over for when you rebuild. Plus I'm sure the OEM clutch cover gasket is $12 itself.

OK, thanks for the input. I've ordered the gaskets.
