7/8 bars

Post by dualscotty »

a flaw in your logic: the thicker bars are only thicker in the center, and then taper back out
your bark busters should fit fine, though you may need to machine the inner posts 1/8th of an inch

as for the bend, I honoustly cant remember what I run

I run Pro Taper (I recommend over Renthal) Windham and Carmichael bends. I like the Carmichael's if using a riser/adapter, the Windham's w/o.

Come on, now. They wouldn't be a straight bolt on and some mounts can't be opened up without weakening them too much. Plus, he might not own the right tools to open up the mounts properly. There is nothing wrong with 7/8" bars and they are way cheaper. Just make sure you do have the metal wraparound bark busters on them or they will bend the first time you crash like most 7/8" bars. The only plus, IMO, with the 1-1/8" bars is that you can ditch the crossbar. BTW, I just bent a set of 1-1/8" bars at the last race. They aren't that superior. Just sayin!

As for bar bends, I like the CR High bend. Brand doesn't really matter a whole lot to me. I've run the cheap Tusk with no problems.

I do run wrap around barkbusters. 7/8 bars have seemed to always work fine for me too. I currently have 1 inch risers. What bend is good for not using risers. I'm 6' 2". Thanks

I never questioned the quality of the 7/8th bars

the way the original post was written, it sounded like the ONLY reason he wanted to stay with the 7/8th bars instead of moving up to 1 1/8th was the bark busters...and that was the only point I addressed

I don't know I've personally bent every pair of 7/8 bars on anything I've owned. Never bent renthal fat bars, though I did trash a lonestar steering stem without even tweaking the bars. But some people prefer 7/8. I run windham bend (highest fat bar I believe) and I have about an inch riser RC is pretty close too. I'm 6'4" and like them high. I wouldn't personally run cheap bars if I could afford a better brand. I know motosport had Mika 7/8 on sale.

I assumed that where the bark buster bracket bolts to the low part of the bar wouldn't fit fat bars. And a new bracket would be involved also new bar ends for fat bars also. Figured I'd keep it simple and stick with 7/8 but with all your input I think I'll convert to fattys. I see tusk adapter/ risers for converting. Is this a good way to go or should I get proper mounts that take place of the old mounts on the stem

Either way is fine. You might want to adjust the bar bend depending on which bar mount you go with. I love my fat bars, can't go wrong with them.

arguably, the mounts that bolt into the triple and replace the mounts you have now would be best
(which also allows you to get rid of the cones some people don't like)

I just went with a set of these

http://www.ebay.com/itm/28MM-1-1-8-Hand ... VN&vxp=mtr

the bolt in place of the 7/8 handle bars and act as risers
then the 1 1/8th bars bolt into those

this has worked fine for me for years

as far as the lower mounts for your bark busters
I took mine off and bolted them together again (like they would be tightly clamped on the bars
then I placed the whole unit In a vice and ran a 1 inch drill bit through it
(this does take about 1/16th of material out both sides of the mount but I wasn't too bothered by that, they have held up great for years

of course, if you are worried they wouldn't hold up, they do sell those mounts for the 1 1/8th bars

You won't need new bar ends unless you mess one up trying to get it out. Fat bars are awesome, especially on two strokes, lot less felt vibration through the bars. I've put 7/8 busters on 1 1/8 bars before but like ss109 said they won't be perfect. Never had a problem though. 1 1/8 bars are only that day where they mount to your bar clamps and taper down to 7/8 where the grips are. I went with turner adapters off of motosport for around $30 they are VERY solid and well built. Plus you get a nice inch of rise from them. I'd recommend those mounts with RC High bend Fat bars if you have the cash. Good luck!

My apologies. I know you weren't. I was just adding it to my post and it wasn't directed to you.

That's funny because the 1-1/8" bars I bent were Renthal Fat Bars! Even with Enduro Engineering wraparounds on I bent them!

Yes.
These are my "go to" bars on all of my bikes. Renthal 721 bend. They are excellent. They fit well and are nearly impossible to bend! I prefer them to any of the fat bars.

I will try to take some tomorrow. They do look good! ;^)
These bars came stock on my Honda CRF250x and I liked them well enough to put them on my other bikes. I like to run the Renthal full diamond grips in hard or medium compound. My favorites for sure.
