Introduction/After market parts???

Post by shoe757 »

Hey guys got a few questions the guru's may be able to help me with. First i'd like to introduce myself a little, I'm a die hard kawi fan. I own a teryx4, Vulcan 2000, 01 kx250, 06 kx100, 13 klx140, 04 636, kfx450r, 97 kdx200/220, 01 kdx220, and a 04 kx500/250. Also a 93 cbr900rr boosted running low 8's in the quarter. So I will be more than happy to help with questions on any of those bikes or anything mechanical. Unfortunately I'm new to the 200/220 chassis. My girlfriend and I race xc AWRCS and NEXC. Although I love my 500 to death, I'm lucky to get 25 miles from 3.8 gallons. So I picked up a 220 to show her that it is more than capable of being a winning bike. Now to my questions. I'm in the market for oversized rotors, rear brake pedal (hammerhead or the like), and pegs. Has anyone had any success using parts from a 450 or newer bike and slightly modifying them to fit? Anyone running oversized rotors? Anyone running stock suspension with race tech valves? Anyone have a great woods set up they want to brag about? I love meeting new people to share info with and also people to go ride with. I'm from south west PA if anyone wants to go for a rip!

Thanks,
Will

Introduction/After market parts???

Yes, the KDX is more than capable.

Your pretty much SOL as far as most of the aftermarket type parts available for other bikes. Aftermarket brake pedal? Nope. Oversize rotors? Nope. Luckily, there are options for the pegs. IMS offers two options, the Super Stock and the Pro Series. Also, any KX500 pegs from '89 and up work. Now, I don't really see the need for larger rotors, or a different brake pedal, but that's just me. You can probably do it if you want to take the time and money to sort it all out or have parts made. Don't think it would really be worth it though.

If you can ride the hell out of the KX500 or KX450 (A or B class racer) then the KDX stock suspension isn't going to cut it for you even with gold valves. Consider adding the front end from a KX500 or other late model bike. That way you kill two birds with one stone, better forks and better front brake. You can also upgrade the rear shock if you feel you need to.

I agree on the suspension 100%. Although it's not nearly as bad as I assumed. I'm going to re spring it this week as soon as I decide what weight spring and oil. I'm always on a time budget so I'm not sure if I will ever convert to upside downs. I did see a set of already converted klx forks in the classified though!I was always a nay sayer on oversized rotors but you never notice brake fade until it goes away. I put an oversized front on my 500 and I can run a 3 hour race and tap the front brakes and throw myself over the bars. Before, not so much.. The brake pedal is more of a comfort item, I tend to be aggressive on it. I really appreciate the quick response!

You can do a front end swap in a few hours if you buy an extra KDX stem or buy a KX500 set that will just bolt on. The KLX setup, while better than stock, still doesn't have rebound adjustment.

I understand the rear brake use. I'm a dragger. I use it to stabilize through turns and when in rough whoops. You can always get creative with a welder! I have never notice front brake fade even with my old KDX which had a '96 KX125 front brake during a 3-4 hour hare scramble. I know my '98 KDX front brake is the same as the '06 KX250F front brake other than the rotor being of the floating type. Of course, different brake pad compounds can affect heat transfer and fade.

As for aftermarket pegs, I prefer the Wide Pegs from DRC. I have tried the IMS pegs and the DRC peg is much better. They fit the bike better, grip better, and just look better. They are cheaper too!
