Rebuilding top end, change reeds?

Post by Sportbikeco »

I bought a 2001 KDX220R and following the advice I had read I went to throw a weisco piston in it.

The cylinder needed replated as it was chipped by the exhaust port, getting that back from millennium tomorrow.

Got the head work done by RB.
Weisco piston.
New chain and spricket 13/50
Tall pro tapers.

Just needs springs and it should be set up perfect for me.

While I have the motor apart should I change the reeds? They are stock and appear to be in excellent shape. I don't think the bike has that many hours on it, not sure why the cylinder chipped...piston was missing like a 1mmX1mm piece from the top edge.

Honestly im not that fast of a rider just want to to run great.

So the mods are FMF gnarly pipe, airbox removed (came that way), RB head.

It won't hurt to put new reeds in. Get some aftermarket reeds or an aftermarket complete reed cage. Either way they do make a difference in performance.
You are going to need to re-jet the bike as well, reeds or not, with a new top end and RB head, the jetting is going to be WAY off.
