Help with 200 carb on a 220

Post by Calibrit »

After going through a nightmare with the 220 carb that came on the bike (ran super rich, ran best with 125 main and the needle on the 1st clip!) I tried by buddies carb on my bike and she ran beautifully. Changed the jet assembly gasket and anything else we could think of but same results. Sooooooo, I am ditching it and I picked up a 200 carb.

In the reading I have done it seems the 42 pilot 150 main will be a pretty good starting point for my bike, boyson reeds, fmf pipe, open airbox. Maybe need to size up the main jet a little.

But the thing I am a bit in the dark about is the slide, needle and spring. I have seen some mention of using the 220 slide, needle and spring in the 200 carb. The spring in the 200 seems very short compared to the 220, maybe it has been shortened?

So what should I try first? The most definitive opinion I have found so far is this:

..in the end i settled for the 200s R1174K needle with the clip in the 3rd from top notch & a 40 pilot jet, 152 main jet & 5* slide in the 35mm carb

Any input appreciated!

I run a kdx 200 35mm carb on my 220, although my 220 is heavily modified I would suggest you run the needle, slide & spring from your 220.... Needle in the mid clip position to start with....40 pilot jet ( also try a 38 )...main jet 152 ( also try 150 ) ...the air box lid I would recommend you keep in place but remove the snorkel...air screw 1.5 +- 0.5 turns ...fuel mix 40.1 with a clean air filter & new spark plug .
Let us know how you get on.

The fiche shows the same p/n for the 200 and 220 slide.

The 220 needle is different to that of the 200 ( the 220 is half a clip richer )...the H series 220 & 200 slides are the same however the E series 200 35mm carb has a leaner cutaway on the slide & won't run very well on the 220 so always check if using a 35mm carb as it may be that of a earlier 200, the needle is also different on the E series too.
