Sent my suspension off today!
Well, UPS has done come and gone and there go my forks and shock, off to Jason's Place for a reworking. This is, amazingly, the first time I've ever sent suspension off to someone and I'm looking forward to getting them back all nicely re-bushed, re-nitro'ed, and with fresh oil. I'll use the downtime to go thru all my bushings, front to rear, and clean and lube everything. Take the airbox out and deep clean it, clean the fork boots inside and out, clean the carb jets and passages, all that good stuff.
Ain't winter great!?!

Harrummpphh....Jason says my suspension is STOCK. Those forks don't feel that soft. I had a '96XR250 and those were SOFT forks. Well, anyway, I'm on the hunt for XR400 springs, preferrably .40's. Anyone sees any, let me know. I may be selling the KDX at the end of next season, so I don't want to invest any more than springs in it right now. If I keep it, then I'll probably be like all of you guys and just get on the hunt for a KX front end. Actually, maybe I'll just steal the front off my KX125 and get a new front end for IT.
Let me know if you run across XR springs....

Check out the forsale boards on the Thumper sites. They are up on a regular basis.

Houston...we have a problem.
The problem is that with my suspension gone, I've taken the opportunity to grease and clean every bearing in the bike. So, it's sitting there with no gas tank, no shrouds, no number plates, forks off and I'm thinking "There's the engine, right there....I could have a top end done by the time Jason gets the boingers back...."
Anyway, that's not the problem. The problem is, why is my check book making this strange sucking noise like water going down the bathtub drain?

Actually what you should be thinking is that you can have the top end and the RB Head mod done by the time the boingers get backNM_KDX200 wrote:"There's the engine, right there....I could have a top end done by the time Jason gets the boingers back...."

Now my Visa card is making that funny gurgling noise...
My only concern about the head mod is whether or not it'll run on the gas I have available. I run "ranch" gas in my KDX- about 88 octane, from the overhead fuel tank. I do use premium from town in my KX, but I just simply don't have access to super-fresh fuel, let alone race gas. So, will the RB mod really run good on premimum pump fuel?

I don't see why it shouldn't. Give Ron a call and he should be able to let you know if running 88 octane is going to be possible.

Alright! I found some XR400 .40 springs and have those on their way to Jason. Then I was lounging around on ebay and found a brand-new gold valve set for the KDX. Won that, too. That oughta fix me up, shy of a KX front end, ya think?
Jason said I was almost out of nitrogen, the shock head was loose, and the oil looked like water. I was pretty sure that would be the case, the shock being virgin 1996. I should see an improvement there. My front looked better (I'm can change my own fork oil, thank you very much), but .40's and GVs and new bushing should help.
Oh yeah, and I've been complaining about a soft front brake which bleeding didn't fix. Brake pads are okay. I checked out the caliper last night and found that only one of the pistons was working- the other was stuck. Got that cleaned and lubed and now both pistons are pumping out smoothly. I should notice a difference there.
Time to go eyeball that engine again and, most likely, tear the cylinder off.
I should have everything back together in time for the last hare-scramble in Berthoud. Wait....did I just say that? I'm not racing again. It would sure be a shame to waste a freshly prepped KDX, wouldn't it? I mean, just suppose I accidently, totally coincidentally, found myself in Berthoud on that Feb Sunday morning with $30 in my hand? What would be the reasonable course of action??? I mean, considering that I AM done racing....

I think you'll be pretty happy with the improvement from having your suspension serviced and resprung. Let us know how the GV's work out.

It doesn't keep giving though the lost spring... it just stops at that point... that's it... that's all she has.
Does that help?

I was under the same presumption but could find 'nothing' in Jasons posts to warrant the 'baiting' label... Maybe I missed it or it was deleted, I don't know but it is still sad to not have him around anymore.....Indawoods wrote:Wibs... I think it proly has to do with this:
