I hear finding piston/rings for them is a bitch and 2-strokes go through them.

Re: 1980 KDX400
Pros: A super cool bike. An awesome piece of history, an absolute beast of an aircooled motor, and cool Factor. And did I mention that it is cool? They only made them for a couple years, so they are pretty rare. Which is also cool.
Cons: They only made them for a couple years, so they are rare. Good luck finding pieces and parts when you need them.

I looked into one of these bikes and (after passing on the bike due to lack of pistons) was told that snowmobile pistons could be a great source for these bikes......This guy uses one in his YZ490....holykaw wrote:Does anyone know a source for piston, rings etc.....

Re: 1980 KDX400
If / when you found a piston, I doubt you will go through it quickly. It's a 400cc engine in a woods bike with shitty brakes. Who is going to rev the piss out of it??
...and if you are just looking for any ld dirt bike, skip the air cooled KDX's. Just get a newer model for ease of parts and end cost.
