Whats The difference in KDX's??

Post by jafo »

I've noticed that there seems to be different models of KDX bikes??? I've seen some advertised as KDX-H or KDX-A so forth. So what makes these bikes different? When I go to buy a newer or brand new bike, I'd like to know what to look for.

There are only two different KDX's being sold right now (new) The KDX 220R and the KDX 200.
Both bikes have the same stroke length but the 220 has a 3mm. larger bore.
The only other differences that I know of are the carb sizes (the 220 is actually smaller) and they have fairly significantly different port timing, and primary gear reduction ratio.
The short and sweet of it is that if you ride steep tight gorpy crawling crap like I do on occasion the 220 is probably your best bet.
If you ride some single track and some higher speed stuff then the 200 is probably your best bet.
The 200 is faster the 220 has more torque.

The 2003 200 is an H9 model. The 2003 220 is an A10 model
The 2002 200 is an H8 model. The 2003 220 is an A 9 model
etc. etc.

Here is some more information to add to BJH's excellent post. I will list all the USA released KDX's and their model numbers, so you can know exactly which is which. Usually, the way they are designated is that they have a model name, relative engine size, family model and number within that model. For example, the KDX200 was first made in 1983 and it is the KDX200-A1. Your 1984 model is about the same as a 1983, as it is in the same model style, so it is the KDX200-A2. The 1985 is the KDX200-A3. The 1986 was a whole lot different (different frame, forks, front disc brake power valve equipped engine, etc.), so it was the KDX200-C1. Anytime they have a real big change, they change the letter. Some letters are used on international versions. I know the 1988 Australian model is the, or is one of the 200-D models. I am not familiar with all the non-USA released versions, so the following is just for USA released versions. I'll go through in order by years, then by size.

As far as what makes them different, I'll assume you are asking about bikes the same age or newer than your current bike. The bikes within each model family are very similar to each other.

1983 - 1985 KDX200's are the A models
1986 - 1988 KDX200's are the C models
1989 - 1994 KDX200's are the E models
1995 - 2005 KDX200's are the H models

1997 - 2005 KDX220R's are the A models

1991 - 1994 KDX250's are the D models

There have been very few changes since the 1995 model. I would recommend that you try to find an H model 200 or a 220 that is in real nice shape. As BJH said, there aren't many differences between the '95 and up (H model) 200 and the 220. I think one other difference is that the 220 comes with an o-ring chain and the 200 does not.

From what I have seen on eBay, the normal price range is $1,500 - $2,500 on a 1995 or newer KDX. Anything cheaper than that may be ragged out or the rare (not normal) steal of a deal. Anything higher may be near new condition, may have hundreds of dollars of aftermarket parts and/or may be a very recent model.

Good luck on your search. I hope this helps.

Whats The difference in KDX's??

Post by goodpw »

Hi All.
New to this forum & just posted an introduction in the introduction area....seemed the best place really.

Question time :-
Is the basic chassis/suspension for the KDX175-A3 the same as the KDX200-C1( aircooled with power valve).
May sound a bit of a dumbass asking this but I really want a 175 as I loved the look, so I would possibly like to retro fit 175 tank, panels & seat onto a 200, It's a midlife crisis thing but I can't afford the Ferrari & too f'ugly to attract a young lady

Possible ???

Cheers.
