well i called up the place that does my normal work. they have great rates. But for some reason they said it could take (at an extreme) three hours to replace my swingarm and linkage bearings. I figure it would take 2 not 3. That would cost me $120 for 2 hours. I was wondering if this can be done by me!!!. I want to save some money. Any help would be great. I havent gotten the bearins yet but i want to finsih my kdx before i start on my honda . any help would be superb

Was the 3 hour quote a "swingarm still on the bike" price, or a "bringing in just the swingarm" price?

I am interested in this also, can he use a bearing puller to remove them and press them back in carefully with PVC and a vice?

not sure, i was telling him that one of them was dirty so i figured that the price was off the bike. Does this seem extremely high to you also??

yep $120 for 2 hours of labor. They use to charge $40 now its $60 an hour. They are the cheapest place around. There is a ktm but they are so expensive with everything. So i boycotted going there ever again.

That is amazing! Stealership price here is $40/hr CDN, thats 34$ Us an hr. and I feel that is high.

man if it was $34 around here i would do everything through them.

kdx220freak, you need to find out what the "off the bike, just bringing in the swingarm" price is. That amount of time sounds like a "bringing in the whole bike" price.

Yep, its not all that involved. You can press out the bearings pretty easily with some common tools. You can make up a press with some all thread, washers, nuts and a couple of sockets.

Off the bike it takes about 15 minutes to take old ones out and press new in.

They probably don't want to do it, so they give you a high price. And if you pay it then shame on you

Do it yourself. For that price, you CAN'T screw up. To remove the old bearings, there are 2 ways to go:
1. Buy the proper tools at about $45
2. Use a socket and a C clamp to press out the old bearings.

Same with installing them: Chill the new bearings by placing them in Sran Wrap (to reduce moisture condensation) and then heat the swing arm hole with a propane torch. They will fit in very easy with a little help from a clamp or vise.

Are you sure you need new ones? I've had great luck just cleaning the old ones on the bike and re-greasing them.

well here is the thing. i know i need swingarm bearings as the ones i have are not working at all. The linkage is greased excellent but im not sure if after 4 years they will need to be replaced, what do you think?? thanks Also does anyone have a picture of what these tools look like. Cause im really cluless. I think if i need to buy tools i will cuase i have another bike that may need new bearings also.

what tool can i buy to do this, can someone give me a link if they have time. thanks

How does it say to remove it-Disregarding the WAY OVERPRICED TOOLS, that you can simply use a socket of the same size for installing along with a Plastic Mallet. Since you are removing the old and replacing with new, can you use a long screwdriver to tap the old bearings out. Also, look in Denniskirk. They sell tools for a fraction of the price that Kawa-rip-off wants.
