Question for 220 owners
I've been looking for a 220 head. Based on the micro-fiche, the P/N for a 200 head is 11001-1409 and a 220 head is 11001-1410.
Over the last couple of months of looking on eBay, I've found a couple of heads that are listed for a 220 but have the 1409 on them. The sellers have had the cylinders and they were definitely 220 cylinders and claimed the 1409 head was on the 220 cylinder.
Up until today, I thought it was all BS. I looked at a clean 2001 220 that had very little done to it - it even had the factory kickstand. Sure enough the cylinder was a 220, but the head had 1409 on it.
So for you 220 owners, do any of you have a 1409 head or are they the 1410's?

Re: Question for 220 owners
My 220s are up at my cabin, so I can't look at the heads to answer your question directly, but I can tell you that the two motors take different heads. I once bought what was listed as a 220 head on ebay, but when I sent it to Ron Black, he told me that it was a 200 head. The obvious difference is the 6mm difference in diameter.

Re: Question for 220 owners
Both my 220's are stamped 1409 on the head.

Re: Question for 220 owners
Now you got me wondering what this 1410 is? I see it listed for the 220. Maybe Kawi was machining the same castings both ways for the 200 or 220 and the 1410 is a 220 cast replacment?

Re: Question for 220 owners
Thanks guys for the replies.
Do any of you happen to be the original owners? I was thinking that maybe what is happening is that the owner at the time let the cast piston go too long and it took out the cylinder and head. They went on eBay and found the first and cheapest head they could find, which looks to be the 200.
I wish Ron could use the 200 head for a 220, because I have 3 of them. But I've been looking for months and can't find any 220's.

Question for 220 owners
I bought my bike from the original owner with only 12 hours on it. Was in storage since 06. I did the top end and removed a factory piston and factory gaskets.

Question for 220 owners
Have no personal experience with a 220 head, but from what I've read, the 220 has a central spark plug tapping and the combustion chamber is concentric. The 200 head has an angled spark plug tapping and a non-concentric combustion chamber shape.
If the above is true, the central spark plug tapping and concentric combustion chamber shape on the 220 head makes re-machining easy. I've done heads with this arrangement using just a mandrel with spark plug threads chucked in the lathe. Just thread the head onto the mandrel and start cutting.
On the other hand, the 200's head would require a special fixture to mount in the lathe, and the irregular chamber shape makes it more complicated to get the desired chamber volume along with squish area shape and clearance.

Re: Question for 220 owners
After looking at some 200 heads, it looks like I'm wrong about the concentricity issue, but the angled spark plug tapping still makes machining more difficult.

3mm in diameter :)
The couple 200 heads I've seen ground out to work on 220's appear kind of crude.

Question for 220 owners
The head on my '97 220 has a 1409 casting number. The spark plug is angled forward (the centerline of the plug is not perpendicular to the head gasket surface).Tedh98 wrote:So for you 220 owners, do any of you have a 1409 head or are they the 1410's?

Re: Question for 220 owners
I found another 220 on CL. Before driving to look at it I asked the seller what was stamped on the head - another 1409.
I think I'm going to email RB to see if he can clarify things.

My 200 heads have the spark plug angled forward as well.Jim B wrote:The head on my '97 220 has a 1409 casting number. The spark plug is angled forward (the centerline of the plug is not perpendicular to the head gasket surface).
Anyone care to guess the impact on performance of running a 200 head on a 220?

Re: Question for 220 owners
Without having both in front of me I would assume the 220 has a larger chamber so running a 200 head may create too high compression for pump fuel.
If I had both I could cc them to be sure.
I have been looking around and I can't find any kdx head with the 1410 markings?

It wouldn't work as the piston would hit the head as the squish area is 3mm smaller in diameter.

Question for 220 owners
The 1409 seems to be the 220 head your looking for as my 05 / 220 with original head has that number
and the replacement 220 top end I purchased " don't know the year " has the same.

That is what is confusing me as the fiche says the 1409 is the 200 head and the 1410 is the 220 head. It doesn't make sense that Kawasaki would use the same part number for both and force an employee to take a measurement to identify which is which.
I sent an email to RB and will update this thread when I hear back.
Thanks to all you 220 owners for checking what you have an replying.
