Wiseco vs. Pro-X

Post by Indawoods »

Has anyone compared the running characteristics of a KDX running the pistons side by side?

The thing that sticks out is that the Wiseco piston will flip faster, greater R's faster.

This got me to thinking about 4 strokes vs. 2 strokes and their characteristics.

I'm thinking if I increase the compression by modding the head and run a Wiseco piston.

I should have a pretty grunty bike since the only issue I have ever had with the KDX is that when in a dire situation alot of times the R's don't come up fast enough to put me in the powerband to get out of the situation. I know I may be losing flywheel effect but that's never really been an issue...

I don't think anyone has really touched on this subject before in so many words but I would like to get your take on it...

I have a brandy new 'C' Pro-x KDX200 piston. If anyone has a brandy new Wiseco, a weight comparison would be a good thing.

It would have to include rings, pin and clips. Not bearing..cuz it's the same.

The whole idea of 'faster' is going to depend on weight (a lot of other unknowns assumed to be the same..maybe they aren't).

IMO..carburetion has a LOT to do with 'grunt'. In no case will you get 4S output..again, imo. I've followed a CRF250..probably 3rd gear...about 10mph..twists a bit of gas and throws a roost. My bike runs very well...but it don't do that!

Maybe I'm missing the point. If so, sorry.........

I weighed them for my KX125 and the Weisco was 10 grams lighter. 150 for the W and 160 for the Pro-X. Piston, ring, 1 circlip. No bearing, no wrist pin.

I realize I am not going to get a 4 stroke outta my 2, just wanting to be able to hit the powerband as soon as I need too while climbing hills and such... not over the top R's or anything ... just right where it needs to be.... in the powerband.

Under a load, it seems it takes a second or two to get there... I need it sooner. Maybe I'm barking up the wrong tree and just getting the compression up will do it for me.

The compression might do it, but you'll prolly need race gas(or mod it to the point of running race gas for it to make a difference). Slightly off on jetting/gear? Slip the clutch a tad?

how much does it cost to get the 225? I think you should do it, then tell me if your money was well spent.

I'm sure the $450 would be well spent... just want to work up to it for the experience. One step at a time, then I can know the effects of each modification and not feel that I missed anything.

After the head mod, I may try the tolulene or race gas... good idea Fuzz...

I do have an extra cylinder to send off for the 225 kit. Just not the cash to send with it.

Inda:

Try the toluene before the mods to improve the low end grunt. After Rons recommendation I am sold on the toluene. I mixed a couple of gallons without the toluene to do some putting around with my son on his XR 80R. My bike was a different machine without the mix. 10 percent works well for me.

Dave and I have touted toluene (after Ron suggested using it) in the past. I don't know who has bothered to even try it.

The difference it makes is remarkable. I run 5% and am very happy with the results.

A different machine. Yes. Absolutely. Indeed. Yeah. ...buddy!

Where do you get toluene from? Is it cheap?

Yeah, you will probably notice an increase in throttle response just from the tolulene/race gas.

Any disadvantages of using tolulene? proven or theory?

You get it from paint stores or even Canadian tire maybe. I can steal it from work, hehehhe .

As Carvr said, "The difference is remarkable".

I get mine at Ace Hardware. It's kind of hard to find around here because the crankers use it to make meth

The only drawback I have found is the guy riding behind you gets a good buzz from the exhaust  It does smell pretty bad. No ill effects on the engine or anything else as far as I can see. I have used it since last spring.

Thats the reason I haven't tried it yet. All the bathtub meth cookers keep the local businesses from stocking it. If I can find some on a shelf someday i'll give it a try.

I think Turbo Blue is mostly tolulene. Why Tolulene in the first place? Why not just add race gas? Price seems to be about the same around here. Race gas is certainly more available than the tech grade non recycled Tolulene.
