Looking at a 95 200 that is in OK condition. Guy says it has always run great... till last fall, when it locked up while he was riding it. He put it away, and is now selling it. He is several hours away, so I can't just stop in and see it. He said it won't kick over (only moves about an inch).
Anybody have any guesses at what it will take in parts to fix it? I'm no mechanic, but I am not afraid to learn and tear it apart. I'm somewhat new to working on bikes, but I've rebuilt v-8's, done engine swaps, etc.
Thanks for any and all advice!

Re: Looking a KDX that won't run or kick over. HELP!
could be
the power valve jammed into the piston (pricey!)
the piston seized in the cylinder (pricey!)
a broken ring gear (pricey!)
the kips shaft nublin broken off and jammed in the clutch ring gear (no big deal)
damaged crank bearings (ugh!)
water-injestion (pricey!)
or a rats nest in the intake ports (no big deal!)
think of it as at the bare minimum a full top end rebuild, if you're lucky. if you're unlucky, you have a rolling chassis and start looking for an engine.

IN THAT POOR CONDITION HE SHOULDN'T ASK FOR MORE THAN $400
Price piston/rings and cylinder and top end gaskets for that model. (You can find some decent buys on used parts on EBay)

What is he asking?
Hopefully, not much.
You are looking at a major repair, not just change the plug and get lucky.

He's asking more, but said he'll take $550. After thinking more, I'm going to pass. I advised him to tear into it, maybe it's just a top end, and he can fix it cheap, and sell for much more.

NOPE!
$550 is way too much.
It is going to cost a lot to repair it. One could buy a running one for $1,000, but won't be able to buy that one and repair it for that, besides all the time and labor.

Re: Looking a KDX that won't run or kick over. HELP!
Locked up while riding is probably a grenaded piston. Unfortunately without tearing it apart, you won't know. There's always a chance that you could get lucky and find something simple jamming it up, then there's also the chance that you're spending 800 or more on a complete top and bottom end rebuild. I'd lean toward the latter....
