Uh oh, extra parts after top end rebuild

Post by jaywhy »

So a friend helped me rebuild my top end (my first time) anyways after a "successful completion" or so I thought. I found these laying on the ground.
I have no idea where they go! Help would be appreciated
Thanks (01 KDX 200)

Bushings for the kips valves.
Pull the head and put them in.

Ah ,hell, everything that I do has "extra" parts left over...toss 'em in the trash and pretend like you didn't see them  tell the wife that "those parts were "never there" when you need to buy new ones  :pop:

OR....do what Doc said and put them where they go

Pull the head and install them. They MUST be installed. If not binding could occur with the sub-valves and now your talking stripped gear teeth and $$ to spend to replace. If you want the KIPPS to operate you MUST do this. Put some 2-stroke oil on them before installation.

Also, I would recommend using a new head gaset when you put the head back on.

Thanks! Is it pretty obvious where it goes when I get the head off? Also under the kips cover on the exhaust side should the gear be turned clockwise or counter clockwise before setting the metal rake thing? Pardon my technical jargon lol
Btw there is no marking on that gear to line it up like there is supposed to be, I've looked

Yes it should be obvious that the bushings slide in the top of the head around the kips valve shafts.

Counterclockwise. The rake as you call it activates clockwise which will turn the kips drive gear clockwise.
With the drive gear clockwise, both sub-valves should be closed.

Ok bushings are in and counterclockwise is how I put it in, should there be any gaskets or anything around the bushings! I want to make sure before I put it back together
Thanks for the quick responses!

The head gasket is the only gasket.
I suggest looking closely at a service manual for the kips timing before you button it up.
On the two sub-valves, they should go from full closed to full open when you rotate the main gear clockwise.
Look in though the exhaust port to verify.
