How to measure a spoke

Post by ced64k »

Interesting
The only measurement that is important is the length between the inner part of the spoke head and the inner part of the spoke nipple head. The spoke head and the spoke nipple head have different thickness and that?s why you cant measure the total length of a spoke. Many new bikes are using aluminium spoke nipples and since they are weaker you need to have a thicker nipple head and have a longer spoke that goes in to the head. A steel or a brass nipple are muck stronger and have less thick heads so if you have a spoke that are made for a aluminium nipple they will be to long for a steel nipple. This is also the reason why our spokes may have 1-2 mm shorter spokes than an OEM spoke.

If you have both the spoke and the nipple, the easiest way to measure the exact length of a spoke is to measure the length between the bottom of the head and the bottom of the spoke nipple. Make sure that the spoke are threaded all the way in up to the nipple head. See picture 1

If you don?t have the nipple, put the head outside the scale. See picture 2 The spoke should be measured as you can see on picture 3. On picture 4 you can see the total length of the spoke, 206 mm and the length of the thread, 16 mm.
