Which one? 200 or 220
Hey Folks,
So I raced my wife's '96 KDX 200 instead of my '03 KTM 250sx at a local event and as I suspected it was a noticeable improvement over the KTM given the type of terrian that it entails. I was so impressed I started combing Craigslist for a KDX and lo and behold a 2000 KDX 220 was for sale. Next day, met with the owner and inspected the bike and pulled the trigger ($1300 trigger owner wanted $1500) which I think I got a good deal given how good of shape it's in. Now I 've done my homework and know that the 220 piston is a grenade waiting to explode so the jug's going to be pulled and plated as well as a new piston. I know the 220 is a more torquier, low-end power type delivery and the 200 is a bit more snappier at the mid-range and top-end power delivery which I like. So here's my quandry.......which motor would respond better to the type of power I like if the heads got massaged by RB Designs as well as the carb work he offers. I bought the 220 for me but now having second thoughts. The 220 in stock form would be better suited for my wife, but if it responds better with the mods I'll ride it. Also, as I understand it ALL of the parts between the 220 and 200 including the frame are interchangeable except for the jug and head of course. Is that right? Any comments would be appreciated.

Re: Which one? 200 or 220
I prefer the 220 with RB mods, a v-force 3 and an FMF desert pipe.
I have both and two hybrids, one with each motor.
Also, the whole top end interchanges to the bottom end just like everything else.

Which one? 200 or 220
The 220 makes a good 'woods' bike ...great bottom end & mid range pull but lacks the top end of the 200.
Yes you can gain excellent results in both bikes when tuned but at the end of the day it's just down to preference....technical riding or more the open stuff , which is why Kawasaki made two versions .

If your interest is in a snappier top end, the 200. If it is more in low end torque, the 220 fits that bill.

Which one? 200 or 220
I've had both 200h with dessert pipe boyseen reeds, good in the woods . 220h with pc platinum pipe, boyseen reeds, rb head mod, better in the woods in my opinion more power overall. The rb head mod really made it feel more crisp if you know what I mean. I know a lot of people say the 200 has more topend but I think the 220 is just as good, I would like to try a 35mm carb on the 220 just haven't got around to it.

Thanks for all the replys. Got some good input and it is appreciated. Sorry diymirage if I wasn't clear in my post. I do have both now with the 220 added a couple of days ago.

Re: Which one? 200 or 220
Well, do you want to race the 200 or 250 class?
I loved the engine in my old 220. Fredette ported it, cut the head, an bored the carb. I did a FMF rev pipe and Turbinecore 2 silencer. Great, smooth engine with tons more topend and over rev than stock. Picked up 9 mph top speed stock vs modded despite going 2 teeth bigger on the rear sprocket. Lots more revs.

Re: Which one? 200 or 220
Splitting hairs IMO. Both are great choices that likely boil down to how you ride. If you are on the pipe or like to rev the I would lean towards the 200. If you lug down low then the 220. That said, both can lug and rev given the right rider attitude so if it were me I would buy based on condition.

Re: Which one? 200 or 220
Hi, I've got a 220 with a PC pipe and got the rb carb/head mod done this year. I was quite happy with the bike with just the pipe, the carb/head mod make this thing a different bike. Lugs down low and a great top end, what more could you ask for.

Totally agree with jjavaman!
I have the RB mods with PC Plat 2 pipe and Boyesen reeds. Better all around responsiveness and snap. Suits my tight woods and occasional high speed riding perfectly.

Thanks! Guess I should have looked at that before. I just (wrongly) assumed I had to be a member a certain amount of time, or have a certain post count.ced64k wrote:See here19Delta wrote:(How long till I get that?)
Donated. Thanks!
