Need some info. New to 2strokes

Post by KDX Hellion »

I bought a VERY nice 2001 KDX 200, took it for a ride today and my silencer got so hot it melted the FMF decals that were on it.
All I know about the bike is it has the Airbox lid removed, it has an FMF Powercore II Silencer/FMF Gnarly woods pipe and fresh piston. The KIPS valves are working and reeds look good.
Carb jetting is: 155main, 1174 needle in the 2nd notch down, and a 45 pilot.

Seems to run STRONG on the topend but down low it seems rich. It smokes a LOT at idle and will die if it idles long. When I got home I looked into the silencer and it was completely Dry. No oily residue, just dry soot. Anybody have an idea what would cause the exhaust to get that hot???

That sounds weird. Have you looked at the spark plug?

Here is my recent plug chop. 5th gear WOT for 10seconds. It's a little darker in person than in the pic. Image

I think I have figured out why the stickers melted. I pulled the silencer apart to check everything in the exhaust and the rear half of the packing was completely gone. I would imagine that would generate enough heat in the aluminum housing to burn stickers and then some don't y'all think?

Am I seeing what I think I am or are you having a joke?

The second plug has left 2/3 of its self in the hole. The colour is a few seconds fron aluminium spots on the insulator. Possibly from a air leek at the breake.
What a beauty

I chopped the threads off with a cutoff wheel so I could get a good look at the insulator. What do you mean by the color being a few seconds away from aluminum spots? Leek at the breake???

Plug looks fine.

I suspect you are right about the silencer and the missing packing. You may be running more fast stuff than the previous owner, that's why he didn't melt the stickers.

I'm hoping so. The plug isn't as brown as I would like but it's not totally grey either. Packing should be here before this coming weekend so we'll see if it fixes my problem.

I've been running belray H1-R 2smoke oil at 32:1 but it's not readily available in my area, I'm considering switching to another brand that my local shop carries.
Here are my choices:
Maxima castor 927
Motul 800
Maxima super M

What do you guys recommend, and what ratio?

Ok sorry. I am going to back out of this conversation. I have never looked at a plug exposed like that before so have no reference points to contribute.

Well normally I would just look down in the end of it, but with the problem I thought I was having I wanted to be dang sure what color it was.

Castor may be problematic with the KIPS unless you really keep after cleaning it. I would go with Motul 800 myself. That or Motul 710 is what I use in all our smokers.
