00 kdx 200 piston recomendations and questions

Post by sammittrue »

new to kawasaki. just got my hands on what appears to be a pretty clean 00 kdx 200. Its got some noise coming from the kips at idle but goes away with a little throttle. from what i can tell thats normal according to the internet. havent taken it out of the cul de sac just in case ha ha

a slight noise coming from the jug i think, hard to tell with my stethascope due to the noise from the kips.

i read the "newbs" forum and it said to slap a fresh piston so what do you recomend? vertex, wisco, oem?...

thanks for you input and your time.

Welcome to the forums.

Have you considered buying a gasket kit and coolant to take a look inside? Maybe buy a service manual, too.
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:

They recommend swapping out the 220 piston as they have a bad reputation of cracking. The 200 piston is ok, 2 stokes make lots of strange noises, personally, if the guy you bought it from says its good to go, I'd be riding, not tearing it apart.

It's always a good idea to know what the cylinder plating looks like and a set of rings and gaskets aren't a big investment. You can also sneak a peak through the exhaust port.
With that said, my 200s have always sounded like they have some piston noise in addition to the kips rattle. More than my 220 motors do.
I swapped pistons and checked clearances and the noise is still there. It doesn't effect the running. Both of my 200 motors are year 2000 and only 5 digits apart on the engine numbers.

The pro-x is supposed to be what the OEM uses. I have used them, Namura, and Wiseco, all with good results. My kids race KX 65s so we go through a lot of pistons. Fortunately we have had no failures, just preventative changes.

The one bike that came with a wiseco showed evidence of a cold seize, but it has maintained the best compression, by foot feel and ease of starting. The wiseco is still in it. It could have a better jug also.

I don't like using the Forged pistons (wiseco) for them, because they have no concept of warm up time, hence the cold seize. For a 200, I wouldn't hesitate to use any of them.
