the only thing I ever found the VIN was good for was getting insurance. I give the VIN, he tells me the manufacturer, displacement and model of my bike. They must have an awesome database.
He always asks me the colour. That makes me laugh. But if you know nothing about dirt bikes I guess colour isn't significant.

Does the engine serial number match the frame serial? If not would you be able to get the engine number that goes with the bike, any other specs?
I wonder where us non-US residents would find the specs from the VIN, I'll try Kawasaki.ca.

Phil, you Bluenoser or are you from Cape Breton?
Why don't you go over the bike with a fine tooth comb, check it out as best you can and make a decision. The right or wrong engine isn't important if it's a mess inside. And as long as the frame, bearings and the rest is on good shape, who cares if it's the original frame and engine?

Just askin'. I undertand why you would want to know the history of the bike otherwise.

Actually I am from the mainland, the Annapolis Valley to be specific.
I am curious as to the last owner to have the ownership papers. I have now found out who it is but am having troubles finding his number.
I do care if it is an older year motor or some bike that was thrown together from a bunch of junked bikes.
I plan on checking it out thouroughly, but I have to drive 4 hrs. so I want to be prepared.
The frame must have been painted or come from another bike as i have not seen a 99 KX with a grey frame. Also anybody know why that cover is blue? Aftermarket maybe, painted?
The seller knows very little about the bike and bought it this spring.

The frame was Lime Green when new. What cover are you referring to. I was just kidding about being able to see it real well. There was nothing blue on the bike OEM, I am pretty sure. Just look on http://www.bikepics.com for another 1999 bike. Heck, even Google Images will turn up a few new, OEM pictures.

The resonator cover.
Yeah checked all kinds of pics, on Canadian models too, no 99's with grey frame or blue cover.
