When bike was idling rev's went full out. Like full throttle

Post by ArkAngel »

Hi Guys,

I went riding on Sunday and it was a great ride except for 2 things. One of the this that happened is that when i was idling my bike to finish the petrol in the carb, after about 1min the bike just revved fully, like it was stuck all the way open (throttle), i tried to use the stop / kill switch but that did not work. then just when i thought i should pull the cap on the spark plug i decided to open the throttle and when i did it almost died so i released it and it when straight back to full revs, so then i opened the throttle fully and it died.

I want to know has this every happened to anyone else?
Does someone know what could have caused it?

Any help would be great?

I think it revs like that because the air/fuel mixture going in starts to lean out as the fuel in the float bowl runs out.

Agree. But why did your kill button not work. I'd look into that.

edit - forget the last part - I didn't know what I was talking about.

my bike over powers my killswitch when that happened to me and it revs like that due to fuel air mixture. I dont know if i have something wrong with my killswitch but whenever my bike has started racing the killswitch usually doesnt work and i try dropping the clutch but it just slipped the back wheel out.

It revved out because it went lean as it ran out of gas. It was so lean and hot it was auto igniting; the kill switch is not going to kill it.

I suggest NOT doing that anymore. I don't see any reason to do anything but close the petcock for the trip home in the back of a truck.

Yeah, you never want to do that. No fuel = no lubrication. Add into that a runaway engine from an overly lean condition and you could wind up with an expensive repair bill.

I tend to do that every time I go riding. My buddies all ride diesels that seem to sip fuel and rides of 140km are common so I hit reserve almost every time I ride so I get to experience that sweet rush of fear as it revs out.I also carry a extra 4 litres of fuel with me and coast the big down hills to save fuel.

My DX runs on anything I have in it, even "old" gas. If it becomes hard to start, the gas isn't the problem, it's time for rings and, possibly, a piston.
