KDX or NOT

I live near Fort Smith, AR, and there's some pretty good riding in the area. I'm almost 60 years old and have rode bikes since I was 10. I teach a MSF course, and many years ago raced a YZ, RM, and KX. I later bought a KDX 175 and played with enduro type stuff. I wanted to get back in to trails and general off road (not just dirt roads, more challenging stuff) but thought due to age and time since I've been on dirt I didn't get a 2 stroke, although I loved my KDX 175. I bought a ttr230, jetted and opened up air intake and exhaust. I'm not happy at all due to lack of giddy up. I've read my bike turns about 17 horse power and the KDX 200/220 is around 30 hp. Found this forum and thought there would be no better place to ask for advice. Is the 200/220 the bike for me. I don't need motorcross capabilities, but sure want the bike to be entertaining.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

If you loved the 175, you'll really love a newer 200. The TTR isn't bad, good low end, but I agree no fun due to lack of fun power up top. The KDX does both.

The KDX is a really good trail bike. I think the forks are too soft in stock form, but springs or KX forks fix that nicely.
The TTR is really slow and heavy, in my opinion.
The KDX is also no MX bike

I think you would find it entertaining

I have a nice '95 200 on Craigslist right now. Search in Springfield MO.

It is listed for $1795 but for any member of this site, $1500 and you get a manual included!

I was near Fort Smith last week riding at Mill Creek in the Ozark National Forest. My 220 is a great bike for that type of riding plenty of low end power. My brother rides a Honda 230 and it is not nearly as powerful. I would highly recommend the KDX.

I'm 56 years old had a 200 kdx h for a few years, sold it bought a crf 250x last year. I kept it 6 months and sold it, bought a 220 kdx because i missed the kdx type power, more everywhere, then the crf 250x. Put an aftermarket pipe on it and heavier fork springs, and ride. You won't regret buying a kdx, easiest 2 stroke to ride I ever had.

Look for a H series, nothing wrong with the E series its just getting harder to get parts. I hope to be still racing when I'm 70 and if not at least still riding!

I've rode a crf and it compares very close to my ttr with the mods. I too was at Mill Creek about a month ago. Nice riding, but very rocky. TTR had plenty of low end power at lower speeds, but then just gave up. Whats the difference in the H and the E? All your comments have been very helpful. Looking now at a 2005 kdx 200, appears to be in very nice shape (no lights, racing numbers) $1300. I'm starting to feel like a kid again, can't wait. Thanks to all.

I had a ttr 230 and loved it. But then i got a kdx 220, and i love it even more. it has better suspension and more power :supz:
the ttr 230 is a great bike, but in my opinion, the kdx is better
hope this helps!

63 here my son is 15 we both ride a KDX although both are modified, I have pretty much the same background as you, started riding at 8 years old and raced flat track and road raced pro till i was 38. the KDX is just a ton of fun and a huge bang for the buck , I would suggest you buy a 2000 or newer H model and mod it with at least a pipe, jetting and some suspension work at least on the forks. a stock KDX is horrible imbalanced from the factory. the rear shock is set for a 170Lb rider while the frorks are set for a 130LB rider. Get one dialed in with a 250 UDS fork set up and you will have one heck of a bike .We ride with younger, and guys my age riding 250wrf yamahas, 350 KTMS and 450 yamahas and hondas and hang right with them. Come to the tight twisty single track and you will be up front . The KDX is just a pleasure to ride , And much easier to ride then the mx type two strokes I.E. Hard to stall and lots of down low pull without wheel spin .I still cant figure out why they quit making them. I bought a 250 RMZ and ended up selling it because it was just a lot of work to ride it ( I aint a kid anymore) LOL. In my oppinion you will be really happy on a KDX.Keep us posted please.OOOPs forgot to add we both ride 220,s the 200 is a little more of a screamer then the 220 but not even close to a KX .

46 here and have had 4 bikes this year
Started with a XR200 good bike easy to ride no power.
Thought I wanted a 2 Stroke MX bike bought a YZ125.
Big mistake, fun to ride just has no low end and was impossible for me to ride with the kids in the woods.
I then got a 1995KDX 200 great bike it needed some work and rode great.
A week later I found a 2006 KDX 200 with a ton of mods and the price was $1500.
Bought the 2006 sold the 95 and absolutely found the perfect bike for me.
The newer KDX has the low end like a 4t and the upper end like a 2t.
The Knarly pipe works great and the Race Tech suspension upgrades make it a dream to ride.
The guy I got the bike from set it up very nice.

I bought an older KDX today. Jason, yours sounds really nice with lots of mods. Your price seems more than fair. I just can't afford that at this point. Best of luck on your sale. I would now like a shop manual. I bought a 1990 in good cosmetic and great mechanical. Loads of power. brings the front wheel up (no clutch work) in 3 gears and maybe more, just wasn't enough room to try more. Any idea where I might get a shop manual? BTW I paid $800 for the bike. I may have got screwed, but that's ok, I smiled.

You can find a manual on eBay usually. If not, http://www.cyclepedia.com/online-manual ... 4-kdx200e/

Congratulations on getting the bike.

Try to find a 1989 - 1994 version of the manual, as there were a few changes between 1989 (the 1st manual version) and the 1990 model (main jet, rectifier (I think)

I already sold my extra of the 1989 - 1994 version and just have 1989 versions.
