Mystery fmf silencer.

Post by niemann78 »

Found a silencer on eBay. Seller states came off a 1999 kdx 220 and that's it. I zoomed into the sticker and it has FMF and So. Calif. Found out it means south California and blah blah blah. My question is, is it an spark arrestor or not. I messaged the guy twice already and he hasn't replied.

funny, i looked at the same one

every silencer i have ever seen that has a USDF approved spark arrestor in it will have that stamped on the side
(like this one http://www.cyclebuy.com/shopping/fmf/images/FMF_Q.jpg )

the one on ebay didnt have the stamp so i would guess it does not have the spark arrestor on it

That's one interesting looking silencer. Vintage FMF perhaps? I don't see any markings.

a spark arrestor is just a piece of screen. you can make one yourself and sick it in there to be compliant with the forest circus guidelines.

what your showing is the end pipe, noise suppressor, and the spark arrester is inside.

Shine a flashlight in there and you'll see it.

That pic looks like an MX type silencer. Also, depending on what state you live in, what will get you by as a spark arrester, varies. In AZ, don't try just running a screen. The Game & Fish guys will look for it to be stamped. If not, you get a nice big fine. On Fed land, it better be stamped.

Don't think a screen would fly here in SC either.

Also, 2 stroke sparkies don't all have screens in them. That E series silencer pictured up there ^ has a "turbine" looking deal in it.

I'm confused....

are they too lazy to shine a flashlight in it, out too bureaucratic to care?

Mystery fmf silencer.

Those that enforce the rules are probably not spark arrestor experts, so they rely on others for that and look for the approval stamping on the muffler. Weather that stamped device is an effective spark arrestor or not is a whole other matter.

Exactly. Or try going to court with your ticket and arguing that "Ranger X said it was fine but Ranger Y gave me a ticket."

I emptied the black clay out of my spark arrester/silencer today.

about two pounds of it.

New packing and its quiet and running smoothly like a popcorn machine again. how very nice.

I found this while searching craigslist. Looks like same silencer, this is a kdx 250.
Only $800 for this bike btw, with the KX front end it looks like.
