H series is 95-06 KDX 200 and 220. They were the last chapter in the KDX line of bikes and didn't really share anything in common with the earlier bikes. They did indeed come with headlight and taillight.

First advice to newbie KDX owners is get a manual. You really can't do a proper job of caring for these bikes without one.

When you remove the flywheel, you'll find 2 coils under there. The copper colored coil closest to where the leads come out is the lighting coil. The stock coil is only good for 40 watts or so; just enough to power the stock 30 watt headlight and 10 watt tail light. No stoplight switch was fitted and there's not enough output to power one if it's a standard incandescent bulb.

This site has much information on upgrading this output by either rewinding or replacing the coil. You will also find other information on switching to LED bulbs and other ways to deal with this lighting issue.

Good luck.

tell us the 10th digit of your VIN and we'll tell you the year

it is not uncommon for owners to remove the headlight from these bikes and maier makes a replacement MX style rear fender which does look pretty good
hopefully they just disconnected the wires and tucked them in underneath

Where is a good place to purchase a factory service manual?
(other than a Dealer)

I found the dealer or the price gouge on ebay is the only source. Unless u want a PDF. Or pay to use one online. Thus is why I don't own one yet.

I don't understand how a person can afford to buy/own a bike but 20 bucks or so for a quality service manual is too much to spend......

For my 2004 the cheapest printed copy I can find is $70.

Yeah, $50ish would be more reasonable for a kawi service manual. that cyclepedia version is better, IMO. The detailed color pics are great. The $20 one year sub is all you need, just make sure you have printed it all off before the year is up.

Thanks for the info. And my bike is a 2006. No headlight assembly at all and the rear fender has been replaced with a smooth mx one.

Lots of people do that to their KDX to get a more MX look.
