Plastic refinishing

Post by bbsdaddy1221 »

My plastics on my 90 model are well worn and I getting new fenders and shrouds but I really want to try and save my side panels and tank. They're not real bad just all scuffed up and with little scratches. I've seen a few videos and tested and few ways with no success. So I want so see if any of you have done this and had good results

That's close but I taking about full restoration. Sanding all scratches out starting with 120 grit or something bad going to a new looking plastic

So I follow a little bit of what he did did and I tried my own stuff. Started with 220 grit then 500,1000,then 1200. It seems to work very well to get it smooth but I think I might even go 1500 for the next test. Oh and I'll of it was wet sanding, makes the paper last twice as long. Then I tried several cutting compounds on a 3 inch cotton buffing wheel on a adjustable die die grinder (this work wonder auz you can set it really low speed and not burn it) that can be had at harbor freight tools for $25 buckeroos (US$). The cutting compounds didn't work real well but mothers metal Polish brought a HIGH gross shine to it quick and the plastic looks like a brand new finish

A 3m headlight polishing kit for $25-30 will have everything you need for a glassy shine.

That's a really good idea but for the amount that I would have to do on just my side panels I'll have to buy 2 kits and that's the price of new side panels and plus I going to do my tank to. I'll be in this for about $16 for sand paper and a bottle of mothers polish, all the tools I already have in my box at work
