Re: swing arm removal
the best way to do it is the only way, a kawi service manual will help you tons. hopefully you won't need a 3lb sledge. I did, and it was a bitch to get the main bolt out. It's not hard to do. personally I would powder coat it, but plenty of people here paint, and apparently it works quite well.

Re: swing arm removal
I had to use a shop press to get that bolt out.......... "POW"!!!!!!!
I wouldn't use anything but powder coating, well MAYBE anodizing, but I can't see regular paint, automotive or otherwise, lasting very long. Also, after removing all the paint off of my swing arm.....I'm willing to bet it's actually a powder coating.

Re: swing arm removal
One big nut, I think 27MM. take the chain guide off(two 8mm). get chain off. take axle/wheel out. pull brake hose off swing arm clips. pull rear brake lever. take rubber condom out of both sides of frame. under one of those condoms, I think it's the right size is a 19mm nut, get it off. now for the fun part, take that bolt out, the giant one. Have fun.
yes, it's like two nuts on either side of the swing arm
*edit* don't forget the linkage bolts/nuts under the swing arm

+1 the service manual will save you a lot of time and money by doing the things right the first time.newbbewb wrote:the best way to do it is the only way, a kawi service manual will help you tons. hopefully you won't need a 3lb sledge. I'm not sure why some of you have such a hard time getting the swingarm pivot bolt out. It comes right out easily for me with some light taps with a rubber hammer.

Re: swing arm removal
these bikes are getting old. A lot of people don't pull the swing arm periodically to clean and grease the bearings and such. That can wear "lips" or other eccentric patterns into the bolt. To a lesser extent but equally as awful, the bearings will rust to the swing arm bolt. Both scenarios suck.
When I replace a rear tire, I clean and grease my swing arm stuff. trust me, bearings will last 2+ times longer.
