Thanks. What is your weight in riding gear? (in pounds, not stones!!)

Do you think the stock springs are still in the bike (no one ever changed them)?

There are compression adjusters under the rubber caps on the bottom of the forks.

Generally, the stock springs are too soft for most rider weights and a change to stiffer springs is what help most for most 1986+ forks.

If Im not mistaken you can get quite a lot of parts there especially for front conversion. Just do it don't waste the time on doing anything with those forks .......I redid mine or bought them redone....sprung for my weight but they just don't handle very well and suck up under ya if you ride hard enough. I put klx ones on mine and almost direct swap and holy smokes what a difference. Sorry but I feel stupid for investing in stock forks. If it wasn't for the fact that I could use the new front rim/tire/brake etc which was also all new I would of been out a lot of money. I had two other sets of forks and didn't do the swap because of sourcing parts just stayed with mine. Ive had two trips now on the new forks I don't know whats in them but I rode hard both times and wore myself out each time I was leary of things because normally Id be over the front forks. Not now.

Tuning those dam dang forks is a real pain too. Follow the guide and you get a good sense of where you need to be but in the end it just don't cut it. I spent three weeks of trying to tune mine in. Thought about going gold valves for em and them just said nah Im doing a conversion. I got them the best I could and it just wasn't enough......especially if I hit the buffet hahahahahaha  Dam four pounds over because of extra steak........mmmmmm

Just do it and make ya momma proud on the whoops.

So upgrading stock forks isn't worth it?! I also found mine soft despite me only being 190lbs or so in riding gear. I usually like soft suspension though. Any recommendations on springs/suspension websites?

I added extra preload to my springs and it made all the difference in the world. My brother does some machining so he was able to make these spacer tubes but you could also try stacking washers. I had the spacers made at 12.7cm, so 17mm of extra preload.

I have the USD forks. Would this still work with USDS?
