Bent KIPS pin

Post by KarlP »

Hey all-

Does anyone know a good source for the pin that engages the KIPS centrifugal doohicky down in the right side, above the water pump?

A buddy of mine has been putting a hybrid together. It has been going well. He had concerns about the KIPS valve timing so I took a look and found that at some point the pin was bent. There was no way the pawl gear was going to go on coreectly.

I'll need right side gasket, clutch cover gasket and that pin thing.

Thanks for any help

Crap, should have read this before my latest order to Motosports. I needed $10 of hardware for my GSX-R, ended up with $93 of other stuff so I could save the $6 shipping!

it actually comes from the "should stock up on....list"
tubes, spark plugs, oil, filters, tires, the usual
stuff you go through on a regular basis

Are you talking about the governor shaft or the lever at the end of the shaft? OR the little pin that holds the governor shaft in? The governor shaft is what the claw gear connects to and it's about $75 bucks. THe lever on the end of the governor shaft (inside the case) is ~$10.

The lever at the end of the shaft. I bought it and a few gaskets

Bent like it was the exhaust valves could not be timed properly. Looking at the wear marks it had been run like that for a while.

I too have had to replace that small pin. Also I buy it from Rocky Mountain ATV as mentioned above. Great service, great source of oem kdx parts ,awesome points program, excellent shipping.

One thing I want to mention is if that pin breaks it tends to get into the transmissionn. There is a little Oil port at the top of the engine case that flows oil back into the transmission side and when that pin brakes because of the way everything is rotating inside it gets flung right up to that port drops right down into the gears and you are dead in your tracks. I had it happened to my personal bike which totally chewed up a couple gears inside. And a friends KDX did the exact same thing he took a jump hit the ground and when it fell into the transmission it locked the bike up, he almost went over the handlebars because it stopped him so hard.
So don't even think about it, buy the part replace it it's only nine dollars and buy an extra one also so that at a maintenance interval you can take it apart and replace it just to be safe.
