220 hits pwer band, high rpms, loses power. Video inside

Post by superman27e »

So I dropped my 1999 220 on the right side. Wasn't even moving when it fell. Picked it back up and started it, and when I pulled the clutch in and put it in first, it bogged and died. Took it back pulled the clutch case and found a little piece of metal between the plates, pulled it out and everything is fine. Took it through some tight trails and everything is fine.

Father that, I took it to a wide open trail and as the power band kicks in, it goes from normal high power band rpms, to even higher rpms but it loses its kick and some power. I change gears and it seems to stay at those really high rpms. I can post a video if you guys need to hear it.

I swear, though. It's like as soon I get one thing fixed, another thing messes up. Smh

Are you sure your clutch is not slipping?

Not sure. Never really felt how it feels when a clutch slips.

Well, I guess it could be the clutch slipping. How would I test it and see?

put it in fourth, against a tree, and slowly let the clutch out.

if it dies, or flips, clutch is good.

if it slowly bogs down, clutch is bad

got a nasty case of clutch slip right here. measure the thickness of your clutch fibers and clutch spring lengths, refer to your service manual or online references for wear tolerances. make certain that you have the proper torque on the clutch spring bolts. also / or make sure your clutch cable isn't too tight and has a little play in it, and that your running quality gearbox oil thats wet clutch suitable

You found a little piece of metal in the clutch....where did it come from? Did you check your KIPS actuator to see if the pin is still there? Seems you skipped right over a little basic investigation and just put your motor back in play without knowing the extent of any damage.

Is the arm attached to the clutch case supposed to line up a certain way in side? Because I just put it on there, felt tension, and went on. But I know on a yz 125, there's teeth on that little arm. There's not any on the kids, but the is a big groove cut out on it. Any ideas on it?

Glad you took the time to dig into it a bit more, could have been more costly had that plate continued to come apart and litter your motor with unwanted hunks of destruction.

I have been running the EBC clutch kit the last few years and have had no problems with it.

No kidding. It was already putting a few feel scratches in the clutch basket. Everything else looks pretty good, though. No grooves in the clutch basket either.

I love seeing a problem solved. EBC makes good stuff, no worries there.

Since the other plates are fine, couldn't I just get the plate that broke? It'd be a lot cheaper than $100. Or would that be a bad idea?

Can you accurately measure the thickness of the other plates? How about flatness (surface plate and feeler gauges)? If not, just buy new plates. If you can check those things, and are willing to risk it with using plates that have been subjected to irregular forces due to running with a broken plate, by all means, replace only the one.

My time is worth money, my bike would get a new clutch kit.
