Metal dust HELP!!!!!!

Post by Spetty »

Hey guys. It's me again. I have a 94 kdx 250. I noticed when I change the trans oil I always see metal dust in the oil if I look closely in the pan after it drains. Not a crazy amount but it's there. Is a little normal or is this horrible? Please help. If this posted twice I'm sorry by the way.

normal to see some glittery remnants in the oil from the clutch doing it's job and all those metal gears mashing on each other

How often are you changing the oil?

Metal dust HELP!!!!!!

If you can, it wouldn't hurt to use a magnetic drain plug.

I use a mag drain plug ($11) and change trans oil every 6 to 10 hrs of ride time. There is a hint of silvery glitter that is normal. When I see or hear that someone changes their trans oil once a year, I cringe. Depending on how much ride time between oil changes----it could look black like motor oil and you would definitely notice an alarming amount of "metal" that is the clutch material as it wears. Since I joined this site and researched, I just use a whole quart of type "F" ATF. It's cheap enough to change often.

I change it every 6-10 hours actually. Never ever anymore than that. And that's also good to know. Also, should my bike be coming up in fourth gear when I gap it like my friends rmx 250? It seems like his has more power.

If coming up in fourth gear is the goal, then let him ride yours and see if he can do it.

my old 92 kdx250 would randomly come up in 4th without even pulling on the bars. bone stock except hacked air box, re-jet, fmf pipe and silencer. most of the time it would just spin the tire though. those engines make a grip of torque. I don't know for sure, but that RMX is probably lighter, kdx 250 is a pig.

If it randomly comes up in 4th with no warning, I guess it depends on how many adult beverages were consumed :partyman: I'm only kidding

Ya. His does it when I ride it too so I know it's true. Mine feels fairly tame but will smoke my buddies kdx 200. ALSO my bike has a 13/51 sproket set up.
