kx 125 interchangeable engine?

Post by francis »

Long story short,
Will a 03 KX 125 motor fit in the 99 to 02 kx 125 chassis. Or what's involved in doing so.

It should but you'd be more liked on here if you put a KDX engine in that 02 KX frame ,,,, ha ha ha, just bustin ya.

My guess, and it is only a guess, is that it wont drop in.

You would likely need to weld in some new motor mounts. Maybe deal with how the pipe or airbox fit.

Probably the same issues with putting in a KDX engine except for the swingarm bolt.

yeah it would be better to find a KDX 200 or 220 engine to drop in there and save the 125 for a go cart for the kids

kx 125 interchangeable engine?

Post by francis »

It's because I have a complete 01 KX 125 with no motor and a 01 KDX 220 and I am starting a kx-kdx hybrid build, but now I'm wishing I had the Kx 03 and up chassis. I'm considering buying a complete 03 or newer KX 125 and putting that engine in the 01 kx for resale. So any advice or tips will help.

I thought your hybrid was going to be a budget build.

Back to the original question, you might have more luck on getting an answer on a site/forum that is more focused on KX's.

Keep in mind the 03 KX chassis is different from both the 99-02 series and the 04-05 series. The 03 rear suspension is similar to the earlier bikes, the 04 and later uses a different linkage setup. Apart from some minor fork differences you don't gain anything going from an 02 to an 03 frame on a hybrid build. My guess is that the 03 motor will likely fit the 02 chassis (we engineers are lazy and like to reuse tested dimensions) with very little effort, but you're not going to get the money out of a bastardized 125 to really offset the cost of buying and modifying it.

Thanks bufftester.
I hear you about trying to sell a bastardized 01.
