1999 kdx 220 revving by itself and cutting off
Got off of work and was riding pretty much the rest of the day. It was doing fine until the end. I was coming up a hill and it started to rev by itself. I hit the kill switch and tried to start it back up. Nothing. I pushed it home and tried to start kick it over again and it started. Everything felt and sounded fine, so I took it around the block and it did the same thing. Tried to kick it over again and it made a loud pop. Took it back home and went inside for a few. Came back out and it would start again, but then rev high and this time it cut off by itself.
Cleaned the carb and check the plug. Carb looked fine, but there was a small puddle of oil around where the plug sits and a little oil of the threads. Put everything back together and tried to kick it over again. Made the loud pop again. I got it started again with some carb spray. Once again, it idled high, then died.
Any suggestions? I just got the bike yesterday and it was running fine.

Ya, know. There was a leak in the radiator hose I found earlier, and I replaced the hose. I'll go check the fluid.

The gas that's in it now was in it yesterday when I bought it, so I don't know if the mixture is right. But I check the radiator and it's full. Can't get it to start anymore

On is face to the ground and reserve is pointing at the sky. And I rode it last night for about 15 mins. Then I rode it for an hour or 2 today before it started acting crazy. Also, I just went out there and looked at the carb and the only hose connected to the carb from the petcock. There's 3 other hoses, but I'm not sure which one goes where. Could this be the problem, haha?

correct
(seems like an odd question but that took me a few weeks of running her dry before I figured that out since my previous bike was the opposite way around)
the three other hoses are much smaller diameter right ?
they are vent/overflow hoses that run down the swing arm and dump out right underneath the rear shock

So the only hose that is supposed to be connected to the carb is from the petcock?

No, you have the main fuel line from the petcock to the side of the carb. Then there are two vent hoses (1 on each side) that run from the carb down under the swingarm. Finally there is a drain line from the bottom of the carb to the swingarm area. You say you cleaned the carb, did you disassemble it and clean it properly? was the slide removed and checked for wear/gunk. Is the throttle properly adjusted and returning to closed when released? revving on it's own would indicate that there is an issue in your carb not functioning correctly. Do you have a manual? Have you read through Schaekaet's thread here http://www.kdxrider.net/forums/viewtopi ... 57#p117919? And finally, we need pics, yes, we are just weird that way lol

presuming that you mean it needs to be connected to something else, then yes.superman27e wrote:So the only hose that is supposed to be connected to the carb is from the petcock?
the other ones are just vent/drain hoses

Turns out the petcock was on correctly, but the dial was on upside down. I had it in the on position, but really it was off. Go figure, haha. Thanks, guys!

Re: 1999 kdx 220 revving by itself and cutting off
Well taking its current condition cosmetic wise into consideration, I'm sure I'll find other ads backward things down the road :p They spray painted it red. Seat and all. Has a few plastics missing, and a few small other things. But the engine frame and forks are solid. Got it for $680.
