kickstarter kicking back

hey guys

I just got the 220 put mostly back together and im having an issue with the kickstarter

it doesn't want to kick through like the 200s I have but sometimes seems to want to kick back instead
(maybe every third kick or so)
I seem to remember this as a timing issue
when I installed the stator plate I just mounted it centered in the slotted holes

which way should I adjust it or is there a different issue ?

on the timing plate there should be a mark on the left side, this mark should sit at the middle mark of the 3 marks on the engine. just setting the bolts in the center of adjustment is not accurate.

took a look at the stator today and my timing was all the way at the advanced mark, so I retarded it far enough that it will try to re-elect a certain someone if it could

kicked it about 10 times without issue :)

I'm having a similar issue. I have to gently bring the starter down with my foot until I feel resistance, then kick. If I just wail on it from the top, I'll end up kicking it all the way down with no resistance at all and busting a shin or foot.

that sounds more like a few teeth are rounded off
the issue I was having had plenty of resistance all the way and it would rotate the crank but then at some point it would kick back up without warning

the end result of busted shins is the same though

Yeah, but the good Mayor said he went through the engine over the winter and he probably would have noticed the gear being toast. Isn't there some throw out spring that moves the gear out when the kickstarter travels downward? Maybe got weak? Just thinking out loud here....
