Hi, looking at a mint 01 kdx 220r. My question is are there any major issues to stay away from this year bike? Would I be better off with a newer model like a 2005? Any major reasons to shy away and go for a newer one? What would be a fair price for this stock mint bike, 30 minutes away from home. Thanks

your jumping the gun, he is asking for advise on what to look for when buying a KDX

from 96 on there were no mechanical changes in the KDX so the state of the bike is much more important then the age

the one thing that is dangerous when looking at a 220 is the stock piston
(yes, I know its covered in your signature)

for some reason the stock 220 pistons like to explode without warning so if you are looking at a 220 and the seller had no proof of a top end job consider that this is something that needs to get done ASAP and will cost about 150 in parts if you do it yourself

other then that look for normal signs of neglect, a dry airfliter, round sprockets, a dry and tight chain, leaking forkseals
the usual

feel free to post the listing if it is online and we will give our opinion about the bike

I will attest to the KDX220R piston problema!!

Just took the cylinder off to replace the piston (to wiseco) on an 04 I picked up and rode once. Guess what? Back part of the piston skirt was half missing!!!

As a testament to the KDX, the thing still ran perfect with the broken piston

Thanks, was short on time, never researched the 220r, therefore annoying Questions. Is a nice, nice machine, putted on the road with it so no real feel of handling or power, didn't want to explode the guy's bike, stock piston. Extremely sweet. Was in dealer storage for ten years.

Ahhh, you scheckaet it, when you should have CHECKED it.

I thought there was a link but this is a good start anyway, lots of info on maintenance and what not...
I could swear we had a thread about that not that long ago :hmm:

That really depends on your area. here in the NW a nice KDX will go for anywhere from $2000 and up, other places I've seen for less. Browse the local Craigslist ads and get an idea of what similar bikes are getting. In the end it's worth whatever the buyer pays, so make an offer. The worst that can happen is they say no.

ive had a very nice 96 KDX (with green 99 plastics on it) and a documented top end job for sale for 1500, willing to take as little as 12-1300 and never got any decent offers

decided to keep it unless you want to come to MI to pick it up ;)
