Have owned 2005 KDX now for 12 months and it has never missed a beat after about 60 hours. The guy before me owned the bike from new (not riden hard) and said he did approx 300 hours with 1 top end. Bike still starts easily and cant say I have noticed any reduction in power, just feel that maybe I should be doing the top end as general maintenance. How long do you guys go before doing rebuilds? I do air filter after every third ride and trany oil evey 10 hours or so? interested to know other owners thoughts on the matter. Cheers.

pull the pipe off and look in the exhaust port to see what the piston and rings look like. Also look at the power valves.

Actually you'd be better off removing the intake carburetor, boots and reed cage and inspecting the piston from the intake side. Most of scoring done to the piston is from tiny bits of debris being introduced into the charging port..

If it was my new bike I wouldn't be hesitant just to tear it down to make sure. With a gasket kit, if needed it can be done in an afternoon / evening

Bike is 200 so no worry with dodgy 220 OEM piston I guess.
