how to remove back tire

Post by goodoboy »

Hello,

I get to the track for training, 20 minutes later, flat back tire. Lesson learn, check air pressure before leaving home.

My first time removing back tire. I have the service manual. Do I need to remove the brakes pads? I am not sure what these parts are.

When I get ready to reinstall the tires, how do I know how much torgue to tight the nuts too? I don't have a torque wrench.

Is there a video I can use to guide me?

how to remove back tire

Post by Gotanubike »

Youtube has lots of good videos. I managed a rear tube+tire swap using only some old long flat head screw drivers. I recommend tire irons and keeping the opposite end bead pushed firmly inside rim while working the other end of the tire so you get some more slack. Apply some lube all around the bead of the tire before inflating.

First, invest in a torque wrench. I am glad I finally did 12 years ago.

Second, buy some tire irons or pay a shop to change a tire.

I finally bought some Zip Ty Racing tire irons, and wish I had done it long ago. Normal ones are a joke compared to those.

how to remove back tire

Post by Gotanubike »

My brother uses windex. I don't get it, it evaporates so quickly due to the alcohol. I have used aerosol leather cleaner with good results. Last time brushed on some 10w-40 before inflating to seat the bead...

And I'll be doing it all over again next week to re lace my rear rim

if it evaporates to quickly you are too slow

I think the big attraction of the windex is availability, the wifey always has a bottle of it under the sink

and once it does evaporate the tire sits in the rim nicely
if you were to use oil that stays in the wheel so when you start roosting the rim will actually move faster then the tire and sooner or later the tube will get caught up in the action and the valve stem will get sheared right off

me thinks

how to remove back tire

Post by goodoboy »

I will bring to cyclegear to replace the tube.

1. What number do I set the tire too on that little thing where the nut is to take the tire off. Right now its on 7.

2. How tight should the chain be?

3. What do I use to lube the chain with?

4. How much torque to re-tighten the nut when replacing tire?

Download the owner's manual from kawasaki.com. It should have the chain slack measurement.

Buy a can of motorcycle chain lube. Bel-ray Super Clean works well for me.

80 foot pounds, as stated in the later KDX200 service manuals. (please, no one cry about 72)

and question #1 and #2 are in essence the same answer
because your chain will stretch with wear you can move the rear axle further away from the engine by moving the crescent shaped chain tensioners to a higher number

Thank you all for the response

Sorry late response, but I am still new and learning.

I have the service manual as well.

I change the tire and have a few comments:

1. I use Crescent wrench to remove and tighten the axle nut. Now I am worried cause I did not use torque wrench to tighten to 72 ft-lb. I saw the wrench in Sears, but I was just out of money (start-up cost is draining me so far.lol) yesterday  I tight it pretty good and I hoping someone at the track today has a torque wrench. Do I need to be worried?

nah, I never torque my rear wheel BUT you should
its one of those do as I say not as I do type deals
if you really are worried stop by your local autozone on your way to the track and use their rent-a-tool service

I would suggest using sockets rather then a crescent wrench though
