2005 KDX200 Keihin PWK35 alternatives

Post by Piet »

Are there any alternative carbs that can be used on the 2005 KDX200?
Will the Mikuni VM34SS work/fit?

I doubt it. Not without seriously changing around the stock boots, dumping the airbox, etc.

The VM is "deeper" than the flat slide carb front to back (It's also vastly inferior tuning wise). I think I have one around. Maybe not a 34, but If I find it, I'll eyeball how close it is to the PWK.

just out of curiousity, where are you from piet?
and why would you want to get rid of the PWK ?

would the airstriker be considered an alternative carb ?
(I know, its a mutation of the PWK but it might fit the bill)

I'm sure you could make the Mikuni work. The question would be why would you want to? The Mikuni VM carbs are no where near as good as a PWK. As for other alternatives, PWK Airstryker, Lecton, or APT Smartcarb. Some need minor mods to use and others require much more.

I am from South Africa, which is part of the problem.
Main problem is I have a PWK carb with faulty needle passage / jet block. Not something that is sold separate.
Can't get hold locally of a second hand carb for parts and have to buy the whole carb. Cheapest so far at about $400 which is overspending on a $1,000 bike.
Can get hold of Mikuni at a very good price and just wondered if it can be used.

Not clued up on the different carbs but from what I have seen on the internet the airstriker looks like it will work.
Is it an upgrade to the PWK?
Although same problem as the PWK is getting hold of one.

PS: If anyone has an old PWK lying around and willing to sell me the jet block (import and postage won't be much on that) I would be grateful.

For the record here are the dimensions of the PWK35:

and the VM34:

It does look similar enough to shoehorn in there. Performance downgrade aside, I have enough experience with the Mikuni to say it is pretty forgiving in that you should be able to get the bike up and running fine on it.

As for the Air Striker, it should be much the same as the equivalent PWK (just an evolution of the design).
