Hi, i have just bought 1994 kdx 250. Both fork seals are leaking. Is it worth trying to clean them with the seal mate method or should i just go ahead and try and change them. Any ideas on the fork Oil needed 5w, 10w??

I have got a manual on its way from america but i really want to get it on the road asap

Those are USD forks, I'd offer some assistance since I just finished replacing seals on mine but the are conventional forks.

Paul Theid from Racetech.com has a great tutorial on Showa and Kayaba USD forks. Might be worth a watch

You're likely better off changing them out. Watch the tutorial, get your manual and you can pull it off no problem.

I do suggest buying the pricey Fork Oil Seal install ram from any good accessory outlet. You can get by making your own out of PVC pipeing but I'm not a fan of using anything other than those seal installers you can purchase. You might be able to rent one or have someone at a local shop simple pop the seals into place.

once you do that, set your oil levels and your good to go for many more years.

If you do the seal mate, 35mm film trick, or the credit card cleaning (a cheap sealmate). It probably won't hold ride to ride.

sayin

Ok thanks for the info. Yes been watching a few vids on changing them and i think its a challenge i would like to try and tackle. Most important part seems to be keeping your head out of the way when you take the top cap off

thanks again.
