2000 KDX 200. Choke knob won't stay up, so I have to hold it while kicking the bike....not easy to do. Is there any maintenance/rebuild to the choke, or do I just have to replace it?? I took it out of the carb and nothing jumped out at me as wrong. Hate to spend $30 on a new choke if there is some way to fix it.

Common problem, simple fix.

Take a narrow nylon wire tie and pull it tight on the rubber boot just below the knob. Works like a charm.

If you use a black wire tie, nobody will even notice it.

A search on this site will bring up previous posts with this suggestion.

Thanks for the suggestion pumpguy, mine does this too and it's so annoying. I had a look at it one day and it's just sort of a notched piece of plastic sleeve that holds it up. It just becomes worn out and I didn't think there was any way to fix it.

Wait... are you saying that from new, the choke is meant to hold itself up? I just thought it was meant to be like that as it has been on every single PWK carb I've ever seen.

Makes sense. Only had this bike for a few months now. I now know why there was a small zip tie on the choke. Guess it slipped off the rubber boot. I may try safety wire and see how that works. Just mailed my carb off to Ron Black today, so will have to wait until it gets back.

lol Yep, it's supposed to stay up on it's own. You can order a new plunger (they're about 25$ here in the states) That's what I did, never had much luck with the zip tie trick.

why not just jet it right so you don't need to choke it

Ha, that's funny. I even tried a choke of a different Keihin carb once to see if it would fit because it was the 'type' that stays up. I'm use to holding it up while I start the bike now... I'd imagine the shorter you were the harder it would be to hold it up and kick, but it's never overly bothered me.

Any choke since the beginning of forever is made to open and close on demand. It's not a terrible inconvenience but I look like a gimp when I'm bending over 60 degrees to the left and kicking with my right foot

Haha, it's 6:00PM on the 25th of April right now, so I guess it is! :)

My 1962 175 Maico Supersport road bike has a similar choke arrangement. It's connected to a handlebar lever operated cable to uncover the starting jet. It would be nice if our KDX carb's choke had a similar arrangement, or at least a lever on the carb.
