I calculated slightly less than 18ft/lbs for the head ones. For example, the manual calls for 18ft/lbs so with my 15" torque wrench + 3" adapter, the new torque setting was 15ft/lbs. On the cylinder I used the adapter on all the bolts. On the head I had to keep switching from 18ft/lbs (when I did not use the 3" extension) to 15ft/lbs (when I did use the extension) to get them all torqued down the same.

So the torque wrench with 3" extension would register 15ft/lbs but nuts would be tightened to 18ft/lbs.
What am I missing here? I can see having to do some math when you are using a crow's foot extension on your torque wrench, but if you are using a 3" extension coming straight out the top of your socket and into the fitting of your torque wrench, how does that change the setting for your torque wrench?

Not a socket extension. The motion pro 3" adapter is like a crows foot, but longer. It comes straight off the ratchet of your torque wrench just like a crows foot but gives more reach. Another nice thing about the motion pro is that it has a box end, so the wrench doesnt slip on the nuts.

The motion pro wrench comes with full instructions on how to recalculate your torque setting while using the extension. It gives you a formula to plug your numbers into and also gives an example. My torque wrench also came with the same formula and instructions for using adaptors that extend out from the ratchet.

18 ft-lbs did not feel very tight too me. I went to 18ft-lbs and maybe a 1/16th of a turn. More compression

Ok, I get it. When you said 3" extension I thought you were referring to a socket extension. My mistake.

Actually just ordered the Motion Pro from RMATV. Have not been at the jug before on this bike but thanks to you guys on here I think I'll be prepared next week when I tackle my stock/not stock investigation on my 220.

Thanks again!

It was one of those things I figured out during my top end rebuild this winter. I bought a set of crows foot extensions thinking that would do the job because it is recommended in the cyclepedia manual, but what it should say is to use a 3" motion pro extension. Of course, the kawasaki service manual makes no mention of extensions at all (that I saw).

Another thing to be careful of when using the motion pro wrench: Use the wrench adaptor straight in-line with the wrench handle, dont have it clicked at an angle - it makes a difference. Heres the instructions.

I had to readjust my torque wrench when I used the extension and then again when I did not use it for each nut to get them torqued at the same specs. The key is to get the nuts all torqued to the same ft/lbs evenly compressing the gaskets.

Hey chaps,

So have finally gotten round to taking the top end off my kdx and have removed and cleans the valves. All the teeth look good except for the left exhaust valve, see pics below:

Basically two of the teeth are chipped...based off these pics, I was thinking of just using the Dremel to clean them up a bit so that they don't chip anymore and continue using them. Do you think they will be alright or should I start sourcing another valve?

Typical. I found mine a couple weeks ago in the early stages...brand new valve last june I believe

But soon, hopefully BDK racing will have a zinc steel valves available for E series KDX. They have the valves ready, but they are for KMX and just need two adapter collars to fit. They are developing those at the moment and when they are ready they will have a listing on their website.

My left valve from a couple weeks ago, not even a year old :?

How does this even happen? And is it preventable?
