Pre 89 and 89-06 clutch cable differences?

Does anyone know the difference and why an 88 KDX200 clutch cable won't fit on my H-series?

My clutch cable snapped (in the shed luckily), but I'm itching to go for a ride! Was thinking of trying the cable off my 88 model but they have different part numbers. Thought I'd ask here before I take it off, haven't even had a look yet. I was thinking the fittings might be the same but one might be a bit shorter but still fit, or longer etc.
