Rear Shock mystery part?

Post by Oldschool »

Hi Guys
I took my rear shock spring off it was an aftermarket spring from Race Tech
TYhe next day when i went to put the STK. spring on I had this extra part ?
According to my Manuals for my 2002 KDX 200 and all the pictures on the web of my exact shock
The Full round ring doesnt go anywhere on my shock !?!
It is the "Full round " Ring under the shock in the picture
Image
(If I understand correctly the Picture of the shock is from an older KDX then mine), But
That part was on my Shock !?!

Should have taken acell phone pic of the darn shock first !

Thanks for any help

Rear Shock mystery part?

I think Jason took that picture. It's from an 89-94 kdx200 and he actually rebuilt that shock...

You'll have to be more specific as to which ring you mean. The four rings under the spring and retaining brackets for tightening and spring and are definitely needed. If you are talking about the one on the far left beside the compression adjuster, that is the circlip that will uhmm well prevent your bladder cap from blowing out the reservoir at 175 PSI

The mystery started when the Manual says the Smaller end of the spring goes to the Bottom
Reading this today and 3 less Beers in me, I can see Bottom doesn't mean towards the ground in the operating Position
It means the shock is upside down like in the picture in a spring install position
The skinny end of the spring Goes UP towards the SKY Not Down.
I didn't know where to put this :

Rear Shock mystery part?

Post by Gotanubike »

Well I can confirm my 89 had that round one. The round one goes on first and seats against the spring, then the cutaway one slides in and is like an adapter between the round one and the cup at the bottom to hold everything. Kinda weird design, but I guess since the cutaway one doesn't fit over the clevis

But after looking at a H series diagram, it looks like they did away with the round one and is just one cutaway retaining ring. Idunno maybe you have an e series shock on your bike. One noticeable difference is the arm extending to the reservoir points up for the H bikes and points down for the E shocks.

Hi, that's a spacer adapter for aftermarket springs. The KDX stock springs have a cone shape at the lower end and the aftermarket springs are tapered so they can fit the Showa stocks and the KYB shocks with the adapter that you see in the photo. Make sure you install the narrower side of the shock spring to the upper side of the shock then install the adapter at the lower side of the shock and instal the retainer. Hope this helps :supz:

Oldschool, yes, that is my picture. You are welcome.

The collar comes with Race Tech springs. Some KYB shocks need it for that spring to work. Some do not. It is not Showa related.
Thank you for participating on kdxrider.net. :bravo:
