Kdx220 piston identification

Post by xrvic »

I'm checking to see if my 220 has the oem piston that tends to crack. I have the head off . Is there a way to identify the piston from inspecting the top of the pistons' markings ? This would keep me from
Pulling the jug if its aftermarket instead of stock.

Thanks,

Well, now that you have the head off, go ahead and put a new piston in there....next time take the jug off, not the head
It's really pretty easy to do and if there is anything that need to be tended to....like power valves (HINT HINT) you can get it taken care of at the same time.

A Wiseco usually has the laser scribing on the top. Look around this forum or google images for a lot of pics of a wiseco.

I did a search on the board which led me here because I have the exact same question. I have a 2003 220 that I bought last year that had pretty much every modification that you can do to a KDX 220 done already. I got a smokin' deal at $900 and the best part: it looks like all the work was done before the bike ever left the dealer and if this bike had more than 2 days worth of riding since it was taken off the dealers floor those 9 years before I bought it, I'd be one surprised dude. I was riding a 2003 KDX 200 since 2005 (which was another piece of garage art from another previous owner) and loved it to death but really wanted what I heard the 220 offered. When this deal came up I nearly pee'd myself with excitement. Really... After reading on here about the hand grenade piston these things came with I started freaking out. I went and read all of the stickers the original owner stuck on the bike and damn if the only one lacking was a Wiseco or some other aftermarket piston manufacturer. Figures.... Anyway thanks for taking time to post the great pic above but does anyone know if the top of the stock piston has any kind of marking that would identify it? I also just want to get in there and quickly pull the head. The bike does not have many miles at all and unfortunately, even though I am a total gear head and have been wrenching since I was a kid, I don't have any time nowadays. A quick in and out as no other items need attention right now is what I am looking for so if anyone can help with this I'd be grateful. My worry is that I know that there are some other manufacturers out there that make these pistons and it might not necessarily be a Wiseco in it if it was replaced. Thanks again!

If it is carboned up, you won't be able to see anything from the top.

Kdx220 piston identification

Post by s10gto »

If you look into the exhaust port and the piston is coated it is a forged Wossner. If not maybe a Wiseco but to me it sounds like it is stock.

I am in the same boat. Picked up a 05 220 with only 12 hours on it with a street title. Then I found this great forum and read about the grenade piston.... Just been riding my woods converted YZ250 untill I get a chance to change it to a Wossner. Not taken a chance.

I put a Wossner in the YZ. Work of art Quality forged piston.

Im in the same situation, just bought 03 220 in nice, low hours condition. Almost positive the PO did not replace the piston..
So what might that cost?
Piston
Rings
bearing
Hone job

No honing on plated cylinders. If its low hours and the cylinder bore is in good shape, then the cost of a new piston/rings/wrist pin/gaskets is about 200$ depending on where you source parts from. While the head is off clean and inspect your KIPS as well.

DO NOT bore or hone an Electrofusion cylinder.

Welcome to kdxrider.net.

less than $200 for the above, plus new coolant

I concur with everyone else. Do NOT hone or bore a plated cylinder. If you really want to clean up the bore a bit, and help the breaking in of new piston rings, just scrub the bore by hand with a red scotchbrite pad in sort of the pattern that a hone would leave. You should be able to do a top end for no more than $200.
