220 Wiseco piston? '97

Post by Cobry »

Hello all, I'm in the process of doing a top end on my son's '97 220 and Rocky Mnt. & other places don't list a piston for that year. They show '98 + later, shouldn't any 220 wiseco work? Or is there a diff. ??

Thanks Bryan

A little secret about bike parts, a lot of places don't list many parts for "older" bikes. Search for the newest year of the 220 and a lot more parts should show up. Since the KDX was pretty much the same for every series, the parts are interchangeable...so YES it will work.
What area do you live in?

Thanks for the reply, I'd looked up the OEM # and saw they interchanged just wanted to confirm. From what i've read here I want to replace with a forged piston.
I'm in the Grand Juncton area and have a bud that's a snowmobile dealer so I can get a deal on Wiseco.
Thanks

Yes replace the piston! You NEED to replace it, because when the stock one decides it's tired, it will pretty much ruin the whole motor.

Yes thanks for the heads up, I've heard that some of the stock ones break. This bike is very low hours for a '97, but still I'm sure we're on borrowed time.
Thanks again.

I am also thinking about replacing the piston in my 220. So I am curious if the Wiseco piston will require the cylinder bore to be honed... since the forged pistons require a little more clearance than cast OEM pistons? Or will the stock size Wiseco replacement piston drop into the stock bore and have the correct tolerance fit? Thanks.

No honing, you don't really want to hone the plated cylinder anyway, if you get too aggressive it requires replating which isn't cheap. The stock size Wiseco just drops right in.

I'm obviously a new owner and didn't realize its a plated bore. Good to know. Thanks for the info...

I agree. The wiseco will fit right in. The extra clearence is built into the piston not the cylinder. Just remember a forged piston needs to warm up before you give it a big twist of throttle due to the extra cold clearence. Good luck!

Just clean the bore with some brake clean, and a green scotch brite pad

Fuzzy, Just for clarification- No honing. Lite scuff with scotchbrite pad then cleaning? That's it?

I don't know if all you guys will see this, but I'm a new kdx owner as well and this is all great information to digest. Thanks a bunch for all your knowledge and experience with these bikes.
