I have used Pro Taper Pillow Top grips for the last couple years, great hold in the wet climate up here in the NW, but soft compound wears fairly fast (I go through about 2 pair a season)

I hate grips. I probably changed grips once a month when racing. Really like the super soft tacky grips like sunline, oary, etc, but lifespan sucked. Renthals and the like killed my hands.

Then I discovered the pillow tops. Harder, longer lasting compound, but the design makes them flexible and soft. Win win! Used them ever since.

I don't think Progrip makes a 979 model- sure you didn't mean 797??
I have big hands and use Progrip 714's on all my bikes. Waaay more comfy than pillow tops...

Two of the best grips you can buy: Ourys or ODI Rogues. I just put Rogues on my KDX, and actually prefer them over the Ourys. They are awesome.
