Help Identifying H-Series Engine

Post by Mayor Brap Brap »

Hey guys, I was able to identify my frame VIN on Kawi's site, but the engine VIN did not work. Any ideas?

that's a 200, also on the opposite side of the 1742 number on the intake housing it will say 198 or 216, 198 is the 200, 216 is the 220

Thank you! I'm assuming that's 196.8 CC's? Also, any way to tell the year of this engine?

The year isn't a huge thing, being that all the H series are pretty much the same. I will say by the low serial # (6694) probably a 96.
My 95's # is 2619

The reason I ask is that I was told this was a 2005 engine and want to see if there is any validity to that claim.

I would say there is just about zero chance of that being a 2005. As far as I know, the engine numbers are sequential. Being that yours is in the 6000 range it's probably within the first few years of the H series release.

Maybe the guy meant the top end was redone in 05?
Definitly does not look like the stock/untampered with cylinder

Speaking of tampering...what is the deal with your drainplug?

Looks like the crushwasher is too small even though the inner diameter is too large.

Oh, it's added to the "fixing stupid" list. If anyone knows of a decent method to look up an engine serial number to find out what year it is, please let me know. Thanks! From what I've seen online, the 10th digit is supposed to denote the year, which would make this an '06. But I'm not sure.

You can be confident that its mid-late 90's. As mentioned, the year doesn't really matter. Since 95+ they are all the same. They put stiffer clutch springs in the 96, that's it. I know having a newer motor may seem like a plus, but in this case, it just doesn't matter much.

Thanks guys. I'm just curious more than anything to know the exact year to see how much I was lied to in this sale.

10th digit is the year of the vin. Bikes and auto's. Not sure if this helps but my 05 220 is in the 15000K range.

Okay, the crankcase is a 1997 after checking with Kawasaki. So, a 2002 220 frame, 1997 crankcase, and who the heck knows what year the head is from!
