Post by sailorcolin »

Has anyone wired a key for a KDX? I want to for more security but I don't know where to start. I bought a w wire ignition key from ebay and want to wire that in. Any suggestions? I am good a wiring and figuring things out but i thought id ask before going at it blind.

You will just need to splice inline with the kill switch. But keep in mind it will be easily overcome if someone wants to.

Back in high school if you left your bike in the back of your truck one of your friends would more then likely go out and start it up to do a smoke show. That more often then not meant you needed a new tire. My bike at the time (95 KDX) came with a tether kill switch. One of the bar mounted ones with the clip that pulled out that was attached to a cord. That made for great low level theft deterrent. I could just take the clip and the bike wouldn't start.

Not sure if its a good idea to wire it inline with the kill switch
Correct me if im wrong but isnt the kill switch a normally open circiut which grounds out the coil?

Might not be the best place for a key

Yes. And so are the dual-sport conversion key kits.

I think is better to install a disc or sprocket lock on the bike. Its safer and you don't need to mess with the bike wiring.

I had an Xr650r that I wired a key into, as far as security it was a bit of a joke. As rbates9 says it would be easy to defeat. I like the hidden tether/kill switch idea and may do that on my Gasgas when/if I make it street legal. Using a lock in conjunction could make it inconvenient enough a thief might leave it alone. I never used a lock with the XR and always worried a bit when leaving it parked for awhile.

I would be interested in an answer to this as If I put a key on it I can insure it against theft. No key no insurance here.

I think he is more interested in how you wired it up than just hearing that you did

just make sure you get an ignition that is open circuit when switched on, for instance............

then just connect it to the kill switch points under the tank, if you still want to use your original kill switch as well, or remove kill switch and wire to there.
simples :bravo:
